Male school teachers The NSW Department of Education and Communities in committed to engaging and supporting the employment of quality teachers in our schools. Men and women are equally valued in all areas of the NSW Department of Education and Communities’ workforce. The Department adheres to the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity in all aspects of teacher recruitment and promotion. Male and female teachers are employed in NSW public schools across all stages of learning.

While the proportion of male teachers in NSW primary and secondary schools is lower than that of females, the figures in NSW are reflective of national trends. The Australian Bureau of Statistics Schools Australia, 2013 report indicates that the proportion of male teaching staff in Australia has been declining in the last decade.

A growing body of international and national research shows that the quality of teaching and the relationships that teachers build with their students are by far the most significant predictors of student performance. The Department has implemented a number of strategies to attract high quality high school and university graduates to teaching as a career, with both men and women positively depicted in a variety of teaching contexts.
