Man Pleads Guilty in Mattress Charity Fraud 17th Judicial District Attorney Dave Young announced that Adam Shryock has pleaded guilty to theft and charitable fraud in a $1 million charity fraud case involving the sale of donated mattresses. Shryock (DOB 10-22-79) pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon pretrial conference to one count of charitable fraud-scheme to defraud (F5) and one count of theft (M1). His trial was set to begin Monday. He and Genevieve Cruz were charged in April 2015 with multiple counts of theft in the scheme. The case was brought by the Economic Crime Unit of the District Attorney’s Office. The charges allege that the two obtained Serta mattresses returned under Serta’s warranty program under false pretenses, claiming that they were being donated to the Ecumenical Refugee and Immigration Services Inc. in Denver and distributed to refugees. Cruz served as donation coordinator for the charity. Instead, the charges allege that Cruz and Shryock sold most of the mattresses for profit at reduced prices from storage units in Adams County. Shryock will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. on May 16 in Division F of Adams County District Court. Cruz is set for pretrial conference at 8:30 on April 6 in Division E. ###
