MAPPING THE RECREATIONAL ZONES OF THE REPUBLIC OF BURYATIA, RUSSIA Prof. Dr. Mikhail Slipenchuk, Prof. Dr. Sergey Kirillov, Dr. Tatiana Vorobyova, Dr. Tatiana Zengina Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia

ABSTRACT New maps were created to analyze natural and socio-economic conditions for the development of recreational zones of the Republic of Buryatia, especially sectoral and territorial structures and their compliance with resource and environmental opportunities in the region. Models of three maps were created: types of natural resources, land use zoning, recreational areas. Types of natural resources map reflects the territorial differentiation, which was formed under the influence of natural and socio-economic factors, especially the placement of certain types of land use, as well as the current territorial and industrial production structure and the specifics of the settlement. Types of natural resources map formed the basis of land use zoning map of the Republic of Buryatia, designed to highlight areas for further long-term recreation development. Land use zoning allowed us to study of the features of modern territorial organization of recreational zones in the Republic of Buryatia and creating a map "Recreational areas of the Republic of Buryatia." Recreational areas allocated on the basis of analysis of the placement of the most significant natural, cultural and historical sites, existing recreational infrastructure, including the main tourist places (pensions, guest houses, hotels, holiday camps, etc.) and availability of roads. We allocated 11 recreational areas characterized by a different set of recreational activities and the different perspectives of the development, which in the future should be subject to environmental assessment and monitoring. Keywords: recreational zones, mapping, tourism, economic activity, environmental situation, Lake Baikal, the Republic of Buryatia. INTRODUCTION Recreational nature management is one of the strategic priorities of socio-economic development of the Republic of Buryatia. The republic has a unique recreational potential, primarily due to a natural complex of Lake Baikal [2] – a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO, which can be considered as a powerful factor in the development of the territory. The recreational potential of the territory is a collection of unique natural conditions and resources, mountain tundra, forest and lowland forest-steppe and steppe landscapes, numerous rivers and lakes, mineral springs and therapeutic mud, a wealth of cultural and historical heritage. All of this determines the possibility of developing of various types of recreation: ecotourism, a wide range of sports facilities, including exotic and extreme, therapeutic recreation, educational and scientific tourism [4]. 979

The aim of the study was to examine and evaluate the conditions for the development of recreational nature management, determine its place in the existing natural and economic system, and correspondence to resource and environmental opportunities of the region. METHODS To achieve this goal it was held a natural management zoning of Buryatia, which resulted in defining the areas, characterized by zonal and regional peculiarities of natural conditions and resources, which to a large extent determined the specificity of the territorial structure of nature management of republic and the place of recreational nature management in it (Fig. 1). In defined nature management areas the recreational potential was assessed according to 4 main indicators: resource and infrastructure supply, existing types of nature management and visiting statistics. When assessing the resource provision of recreational nature management there were identified the main natural and cultural-historical objects providing modern development of recreation in the region. When assessing the infrastructure provision the following factors were considered: features of the settlement, transport provision of the area, including the density of the road network, the provision of accommodation and recreational services. In selected areas the prevailing types of recreational nature management have been defined. To estimate the visiting the statistical data for the 20122013 period about servicing tourists in the territory of the region under study have been analyzed. RESULTS The obtained results are summarized in the integrated assessment Table 1, that reflects the differentiation of nature management areas according to the analyzed indicators. The table complements the map “Nature management zoning of the Buryat Republic”, where the most significant territories in terms of recreational use have been identified and characterized. It is a legend of a developed layout draw of the Integrated arrangement of recreational nature management of Buryatia, where the allocation of territorial units was held on the basis of data analyzing and summarizing. This work was carried out during the field research in the Barguzin Valley, in recreational areas “Podlemorye” in the Barguzin reserve, near Lake Kotokel, in Severobaykalsky and Pribaykalsky administrative areas, as well as on the basis of collected and analyzed statistical data, cartographic information [5], literary information, web sites of the Ministry of Culture of Buryatia and other sources. Infrastructure component of the recreational potential was studied in terms of the availability of the transport network and accommodations. In addition, infrastructure capacity is not only a result of the economic development of the territory, but also a factor of its future development [3]. The tourist and recreational infrastructure is expected to develop intensively mainly in the coastal regions of Buryatia and around major settlements.
