A WORD FROM YOUR DIETITIAN Erica Savage (Registered Dietitian) & Mariana Ayoub (Dietetic Intern) Celebrate “Superfoods” During National Nutrition Month! However, you don’t have to be in a relationship to have relationships; there are various types and forms. We all have different kinds of relationships, for example, with our friends, our roommates, our family, our coworkers, and even our pets.

Students wishing to apply for an extension can pick-up an Extension Request Form in the Centre for Housing & Residence Life. Please note: not all Extension Requests are guaranteed to be approved as our residence rooms are used for Conference Services and Summer School beginning in May.

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS? The Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers has published a study in 2012 that surveyed 450 Canadian employers. Based on the results, “core skills including communication, analytical ability and a strong work ethic, are most valued by employers. They also place a slightly higher premium on co-curricular involvement than academic performance, meaning that a well-rounded graduate will have an advantage in the competitive job market.” (Marchildon) The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is here to assist you in discovering and developing these sought skills. It is designed to help you find, recognize, and supplement your formal education with valuable out-of-class experience. By developing your record you can document your holistic university experience. The CCR documents activities that have occurred during your time at Saint Mary’s University; therefore, providing a viewer with more details on your activity levels. With a CCR you can supplement your formal education when applying for employment, reinforce your scholarship application package, or bolster an admission package for a graduate school. Activate your account now and ensure successful verification of your past activities. To learn more see the Student Academics tab on SMUport or stop by Career Services, 4th floor Student Centre. 2

A Good Relationship A good relationship is based on mutual respect. It involves concern for and sensitivity to each other’s feelings and needs, as well as an appreciation of the things that make each individual special. Of course, within this ideal, there is room for arguments, bad moods, differences of opinion, and even anger. However, in a healthy relationship, both individuals find effective ways of dealing with their differences. A good relationship should enrich and add to your life, not narrow it by forcing you to give up those things that are integral to your character. A Toxic Relationship A toxic relationship is one that has a negative impact on our lives. Toxic relationships are not good for either involved individual and can severely damage the self-esteem of the individuals. Toxic relationships are full of anxiety, insecurity, uncertainty, frustration, hostility, cynicism, hopelessness, loneliness, and depression. Celebrate Your Relationships! This month, why not spend a little time thinking about the different relationships in your life, and how important they are. Share an intimate moment with those individuals that matter in your life, and let them know you appreciate the love and support they offer you through your relationship. Take a look at your own actions and be sure that you are reciprocating the love and support they show you. Most of all, take some time to rejuvenate those relationships you may have been neglecting lately, maybe you haven’t talked with your sister back home in awhile, or maybe you and your high school friends should have a little reunion. Whatever you do, recognize those individuals that make an impact on your life through your relationships. The Counselling Centre If you are having relationship issues or you are experiencing other personal concerns, the Psychologists/Clinical Therapists at Saint Mary’s can help. We offer individual and couples counselling. Call or drop by our office to make an appointment - Monday through Friday, 9am-12pm & 1pm-4pm.
