Master’s Degree Program „Linguistics and Web Technology“ A. Goals / Outline of the Program 1. Outline of the Program The Department of Foreign Language Philology of the Philipps-University Marburg has developed the new Master’s degree program Linguistics and Web Technology (M.A. L&WT), which has begun with 17 students from 14 nations in the Winter Term 2009/2010. This program uses the experience gained through the Philipps-University Marburg’s Language Technology, a minor subject belonging to the Magister course of studies which has been run since 2002. It combines the contents of this course of studies with classes that incorporate the core elements of linguistics and language technology as well as an increased share of practical exercises. The program aims towards furthering the scientific knowledge of the participants and complementing their work experience. The program benefits from the years of experience with the world’s largest e-learning platform for linguistics, the Virtual Linguistics Campus. All contents of the program are already available online and are part of different courses of studies. They have been tested and used by numerous universities in Germany and abroad. The quality of the contents, which are constantly updated, is secured through constant peer review by linguists and computational linguists. Additional print materials (the VLC „workbooks“) complement the classes. This concept of blended learning is – at least for the fields of linguistics and language technology – unrivaled in the world. A special feature of this MA program is the possibility of doing the 3rd semester specialization module in Jamaica (see section I.)
2. Essential Features •

The M.A. L&WT combines research with practical application. Graduates are prepared for possible scenarios of application in their fields (programming, webdevelopment) but also have to master pure research tasks, such as typological linguistic analysis. The successful completion of the program allows for further advanced education opportunities, such as a doctorate’s degree. This advanced program is directed towards graduates of linguistics, computer science, as well as graduates of foreign language and literature studies. Furthermore, it is available for those who obtained the qualification required for participation by means of their profession, a university course or in any other way. The course of studies can be attended full-time (2 years) or part-time (4 years). The program must be completed within 5 years (maximum).
3. Internationality The program was designed in English and is taught accordingly. The co-operation of the VLC with a considerable number of domestic and foreign universities and other organizations ensures the internationalization and standardization of the contents.

B. Educational Objectives / Job Market Orientation 1. Learning Outcomes Content: Acquisition and consolidation of theoretical and practical competence in the fields of comparative and cognitive linguistics, language technologies, web-development and project-management respectively; further qualification for active participation in all phases or management of elaborate projects in the fields of language technologies, E-learning, webdevelopment and multimedia, especially in projects that combine elements from more or all of these areas; development of the ability to critically judge the possibilities and limits of the technologies involved in such projects. Methods: Learning the ability to prepare and conduct complex projects in a team; acquisition of competence for independent, self-directed learning with media, especially e-learning sites as a basis of successful lifelong learning; acquisition of advanced scientific qualifications as a prerequisite for a subsequent PhD program.
2. Occupational Areas The aim of this program is to prepare graduates for professions and/or to expand occupational fields by combining the theoretical contents of linguistics with modern technologies and methods for the application of this specialist knowledge. Possible occupational areas: • • • • • • • • •
lecturer in training and further education (basic and additional qualification) editorial professions (book publishers, electronic media) professions in administrative services (libraries, databases) web-authors (web-development and linguistic authoring) learning managers (development of computer-based linguistic teaching and learning material) linguistic web-experts (digital development tasks) areas of computer linguistics with practical focus (for example machine translation projects, grammar projects) project managers (professional development tasks in (in-) dependent work) work in international organizations
C. Degree Course Scheme The Master’s degree Linguistics and Web Technology only starts in the winter term and consists of 120 credits (CP, 1 CP ~ 30 hours workload) and covers the following areas (details see next page):

Also, UWI will supervise the student’s MA project into the study of Creole Variation in the Caribbean. Northern Caribbean University (Mandeville, Jamaica) invites a 3rd semester student from the MA is to study at NCU support NCU in all issues of E-Learning, thus realizing specialization module S3 at NCU.
