Matching and Multiple Choice Task Type tips When tackling any IELTS Reading Task type, we recommend you do the following: •

For each paragraph, decide what the topic is and its main idea. Then make a quick note of this topic and main idea in the margin next to the paragraph. (*) Making a note of the topic will help keep you focussed as you read the passage and put you in a good position to answer the questions correctly.

This week we will be focusing on two IELTS Reading Test task types: •

Matching

Multiple Choice

IELTS Reading Test ‘Matching’ Task Type In this task type, you are given a list of headings and you have to choose the most suitable heading for each paragraph of the text. What you're basically trying to do here is to summarise the essence of the paragraph and find the most suitable heading from the list. There are usually more headings than paragraphs. The instructions on the test paper will be as follows (or something similar): Choose the most suitable heading for each paragraph from the list of headings below.

Tips and Strategies for the ‘matching’ task type •

Read the instructions and the example. Make sure you understand why the example is correct.

If the instructions say that you cannot use a heading more than once, then cross the heading used in the example off the list (very satisfying (!) and stops you from accidentally using it again).

• •

Look at your topic / main idea information in the margin (*) next to paragraph 1. Try to summarise (in your head) what the paragraph is about and then find a heading that is very similar to your summary. Write this number or letter in the margin next to paragraph 1 (not on your answer sheet yet as you may change your mind).

Repeat this procedure for the remaining paragraphs. Make sure that the fact mentioned in the heading is the MAIN IDEA of the paragraph. I have seen cases where a paragraph mentions the same fact as a heading but the fact is only additional information (not the main idea). This is why it is always important to identify the topic and the main idea of a paragraph before embarking on any task.

When you are satisfied with your choice of answers, transfer the information to your answer sheet.

IELTS Reading Test ‘Multiple Choice’ Task Type In this task type, there is a question and a number of answers (three, four or five) and you have to choose the right one (sometimes you have to choose more than just one). The instructions on the test paper are something on the lines of: Choose the appropriate letter. Tips and Strategies for the ‘multiple choice’ task type •

Read the instructions and the example. Make sure you understand why the example is correct.

Make sure you read the options carefully. In particular, you should look out for misleading options. Misleading options: o

say something which may be true but isn’t in the text. Remember you are only answering questions about the text. We have seen a number of students lose marks because they fall into this ‘trap’.

o

Use words from the text in an untrue statement Read the options carefully and make sure you know what each one actually means. When you choose an option, imagine that we are there asking you, ‘Why?’ and you must justify why you chose that particular option and why the others are not correct.

For every possible answer, you need to decide if it is true, false or not given in the text. Finally, the one you have marked as ‘true’ is the correct option. True = passage says exactly the same thing False = passage says exactly the opposite Not given = not in the passage at all.

Start implementing these tips and strategies immediately so that you are familiar with them when you sit the IELTS Test.
