3. Australia Day and its history The first people on the continent Australia were the Aborigines. The country Australia started as a prison* colony for people from Great Britain. The first ships arrived in Sydney harbour in 1788. In the beginning, Australia consisted of* six colonies, which formed a Commonwealth in 1900. Australia became independent* of Great Britain in 1986, but the Queen is still their constitutional monarch. Australia’s national holiday is January 26th. Australia Day is always a long weekend, with the Monday as a holiday for everyone. Banks, schools, public offices and most shops are closed on Australia Day. When people first celebrated Australia Day in 1808, they also called it “Anniversary* Day” or “Foundation* Day”. January 26th became a public holiday in 1988 all over Australia, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Australia’s founding, the 200th birthday. On Australia Day, you can watch a ferry race or a surfing race across Sydney harbour. The Prime Minister also makes an address to the nation. There are fireworks in most cities, for example in the capital city, Canberra. Remember that the seasons are reversed* in the Southern Hemisphere. January 26th is the middle of summer there. For this reason, people normally have barbecues, meet at the beach, go to concerts or have a picnic. _____ *prison: Gefängnis foundation: Gründung
