Textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra, Applications Version (ninth edition) by H. Anton and C. Rorres Syllabus: Text sections: 1.1-1.6, 2.1-2.3, 3.1-3.5, 4.1-4.3, 5.1-5.6, 6.1-6.3, 6.5-6.6, 7.1-7.3, 10.1-10.4 Grading scheme: Lab work: 10% Midterm exam: 35% Final exam: 55% Exam dates and times: (set by the Faculty of Engineering) Midterm: Tuesday, March 3, 1900 Final: Tuesday, April 14, 0900 Deferred final: Saturday, May 9, 0900 WARNING: Students must verify the date of the final exam on BearTracks when the Final Exam Schedule is posted. Note: There is no deferred midterm. If you have valid reasons to miss it the weight of the midterm will be transferred to the final exam i.e., the weight of the final will be 90%. Calculators: No calculators or other hand held devices are allowed in midterm or final exams Labs: There is a weekly 50 minute lab period. The first labs will take place on or after January 12, 2009. Homework policy: There will be weekly homework assignments, with some questions used for part of the midterm and final exams. Solutions will be posted on the course web page. Course notes: A set of notes that will be used in class will be available on the course web page prior to each lecture. 1

Deferred Final Examination: A student who cannot write the final examination because of an incapacitating illness or is suffering from severe domestic affliction or other compelling reasons can apply for a deferred final examination. Such an application must be made to the students Faculty office within 48 hours of the missed examination and must be supported by a completed University of Alberta Medical Statement Form or other appropriate documentation (Calendar section 23.5.6). Deferred examinations are a priveledge and not a right; there is no guarantee that a deferred examination will be granted. Misrepresentation of Facts to gain a deferred examination is a serious breach of the Code of Student Behaviour. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Academic Integrity: The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Code of Student Behaviour (online at www.ualberta.ca/secretariat/appeals.htm) and avoid any behaviour which could potentially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University. All forms of dishonesty are unacceptable at the University. Cheating, plagiarism and misrepresentation of facts are serious offenses. Anyone who engages in these practices will receive at minimum a grade of zero for the exam or paper in question and no opportunity will be given to replace the grade or redistribute the weights. Any offense will be reported to the Senior Associate Dean of Science who will determine the disciplinary action to be taken. Typical sanctions for serious violations of the Code have included disciplinary grade reductions, disciplinary failing grades, suspension or permanent expulsion from the University. Exams: Your student photo I.D. is required at exams to verify your identity. Students will not be allowed to begin an examination after it has been in progress for 30 minutes. Students must remain in the exam room for at least 30 minutes from the time the exam commenced. Electronic equipment is not to be brought to exams. Cell Phones: Cell phones are to be turned off during lectures, labs and seminars. Cell phones are not to be brought to exams. Students With Disabilities: Students who require accommodation in this course due to a disability are advised to discuss their needs with Specialized Support & Disability Services (2-800 Students Union Building).
