Weather conditions create numerous potholes in Town

HALTON HILLS, ON – The recent fluctuations in temperatures has resulted in one more of life’s certainties, particularly to those living in Canada– the appearance of potholes in the roadway. Potholes are caused when moisture enters a crack in the granular base below the surface asphalt, then freezes and expands during cold temperature periods. The expansion puts pressure on the crack, causing the asphalt to break away, resulting in a pothole. As vehicular traffic passes over the pothole the sides crumble and the pothole size increases. The Town of Halton Hills is advising motorists that pothole repairs are underway and are repaired based on the same priority system as the Town clears snow. High traffic arterial roads will be repaired first, followed by collector roads and finally local residential areas. “The Town of Halton Hills Public Works Department is diligently repairing potholes in roadways as they appear. We are mindful of the disruption these potholes can cause and I am confident our crews will address our citizens’ concerns promptly and effectively,” said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. The Town reminds motorists that the repairs being made are temporary measures only as the moisture is still in the ground and is prone to the freeze/thaw cycle that we continue to experience. Once the weather warms, Public Works staff will have the opportunity to fill the potholes with a more permanent asphalt material. It is important for motorists to approach potholes with caution as water or slush can hide the depth and size of the pothole. The Town of Halton Hills encourages all residents to report a pothole by calling (905) 873-2601 ext. 2603 to leave a request for service.
