Ashore, he served the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia, as chaplain to the Officers Basic Course and the FBI Academy. With the Coast Guard in Alaska, he provided chaplain coverage for their stations from Sitka to Kodiak to St. Paul Island to Attu, stretching over a geographical area of thousands of miles and ocean. As chaplain in Hawaii, he served the Headquarters of Marine Corps Pacific and the Headquarters of the Pacific Commander. He was assigned chaplain to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and as Senior Chaplain Naval Base Pearl Harbor where he participated in ceremonies at the Arizona Memorial along with burials and ceremonies at the National Punchbowl Cemetery, and provided leadership for and supervision of the Pearl Harbor Catholic chapels, Protestant chapels and the Jewish Synagogue. During the Vietnam War, he served in support of amphibious landings, Marines ashore, the Navy Riverine Force and on numerous ships serving along the Vietnamese coast. In this duty, he ministered to many wounded, dying and dead along with their families. After retirement from the military, he directed his denomination’s chaplains, taught in both college and theological seminary, and pastored the Wilmore Free Methodist Church which, under his leadership, was selected by the University of North Carolina Lilly Foundation Study as one of the top 300 Protestant churches in America. He also was honored as a Kentucky Admiral. Dean has been married to his lovely wife, Ruth, for 57 years. They have four sons, two of which are also veterans – one Navy and one Air Force.
