Residence Welcome Letter A Letter From Your Residence Manager Hello, and welcome to Elgin Hall! As your Residence Manager for the 2017/18 academic year, I am excited to welcome you to your home away from home! Residence is so much more than a place to eat and sleep. At Elgin, you will meet great people, build life-long connections, and have lasting memories to leave with. Living in residence is also a very different type of lifestyle from what most of you are used to, but there is an abundance of resources we can connect you with to ensure that you transition successfully and succeed here at Western. As the Residence Manager, my role is to meet your needs in a variety of ways and support your development outside of the classroom. However, I seldom work alone! None of what I do would be possible if not for the help of our student leaders: the Residence Staff, Sophs, and Resident’s Council. These individuals are incredibly dedicated, capable, and are here to ensure that you have the best first year experience. There is an opportunity for you to get involved with Council in your first year as well, and I whole-heartedly encourage you to do so! Your time at Western will fly by, and you can make the most of it by getting involved and really immersing yourself in the Elgin, Western, and London communities. Come talk to me about what you’re interested in and how you would like to personalize your residence experience; that’s what I’m here for! I hope your summers are exceptional, and I look forward to meeting all of you in September! Sincerely, Scott Buttenham

Residence Welcome Letter A Letter From Your Head Soph Congratulations on your acceptance to one of the best Universities in Canada, and welcome to (probably) the greatest residence on campus! You are about to go on an incredible journey, one where you will learn so much about yourself and really discover who you are. This campus and this residence will become your new home, and the people within it are going to become your new family. You may be asking yourself, what is a Soph? Well, Sophs are students who are full of energy and are ready to welcome you to university life. They have really weird names, strange dances, wear the same uniform for an entire week, but most importantly, your Soph is going to become the first friend you make on this campus. Our goal for this upcoming year is to help you with your transition into university, whether it be academically, socially or everything in-between. We want to make sure that we help you achieve the best university experience possible, and that your first year is something you will remember fondly. It’s a big task, but we are ready for it. Think of us as a cool older sibling, there for you whenever you need it, ready to pass down our own wisdom that we have collected from our own experiences. I have the pleasure of leading the most inspiring, thoughtful and unique group of Sophs I have ever met and we can’t wait to get to know you! Entering your first year can be really intimidating. But that’s okay, everyone feels the same, even if they don’t show it. Everyone’s first year experience will be different, and what you are expecting may not be what you get. If you ever feel like you’re getting lost along the way, your Sophs will be here to support you, and you will always be able to find a friend from any Soph in this building. As your student leaders, we are determined to show you everything Western has to offer, so tell us what you want from your experience and we will help you find it! Here’s a few tips for O-Week (and the rest of the year in general): -
Introduce yourself every time you get the chance. Everyone is looking for a friend, and you never know where you might find one
-
GO TO EVERYTHING!!! Seriously, go to everything. You only get to do O-Week as a first year once, so make sure you experience everything because the week goes by fast
-
Try and keep your door open as much as possible. It will help you get to know the people on your floor better, and it’s nice to be social sometimes
-
Get involved! There is an endless list of possibilities for you to be involved with! It could be a sports team, council, clubs, floor events, and formals; get involved and really enjoy that residence experience!
Good luck in your first year! We can’t wait to see all the things you will do! Sincerely, It Girl
