MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Thanks for belonging to the Saginaw Club. We all have our reasons for being a part of this one of a kind institution. Deirdre and I felt fortunate to have our wedding reception at the club Thanksgiving weekend, 1982. As much as we forewarned our out of town guests, “watch out”, the Saginaw Club serves a pretty stiff drink, a few went to the head of the class and still talk about the experience. Whatever your fond memory of Saginaw Club membership might be, on behalf of the Board of Managers, we are thankful.

A few notes of concern. Without you, an active viable membership, we do not exist. Some say private clubs are a dying breed, especially downtown ones like ours. Rest assured there is none of that feeling from your President or Board of Managers. We are more determined than ever to protect our club and our membership. We can use your help. If you know of someone who has expressed an interest in the Saginaw Club, let us know. If we can use your name in asking about membership consideration, all the better. Myself, Membership Director Laureen Lutenski, or a Board member will be thrilled to follow up. Yes, we have had some attrition in membership due to a variety of reasons. Thankfully, we have generated over 30 new members in the past two years alone. At present, I know of 6 additional Saginawians who are considering joining the club. A few notes of positive reflections. Financially the Saginaw Club continues to be in solid shape. Our debt load is not heavy and will be fully retired within 6 years. Membership activity is on the rise with more lunches and dinners served in the month of August 2012 compared to 2011. With the fall season here, many more special events and activities will be taking place. On behalf of your Board of Managers and staff, we look forward to seeing you and your family at the club. “Mac” MacDonald President

WELCOME

CLIPS OF THE CLUB’S HISTORY

A message from the Club Historian, Chuck Hoover The year was 1889 and everything was new or being started now in our community. The City of Saginaw had just been formed by merging the old towns from both sides of the river. The lumber era had ended and now business led the community to make Saginaw a better place to live. Community and business leaders felt a need to organize a special Social Club in the old East Saginaw area. Within 2 weeks they had organized an association called the “East Saginaw Club” for the purpose of promoting social interaction among the members and providing a clubhouse for them to use. They adopted a constitution and by-laws, developed a site search committee and made it a stock membership club of $100 per share to pay for the new clubhouse. By the end of a month, 22 potential sites were reviewed and a site was selected on the new Washington Street where two old houses had been removed and only some willow trees remained. That site was lot 9 and the north 40 feet of lot 10 of the Hoyt Plat. They bought the site for $4,750 and it is still the location our clubhouse with additional land acquired through the years.

MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Stability – Predictability - Consistency These are qualities to which we will always aspire in the club and are not easily found in today’s business world. Perhaps it explains, in part, why so many continue to return and meet regularly at the club and have done so for years and years.

Others are discovering the value of these basic tenets of the Saginaw Club since its beginning. Add some outstanding food and service in the distinctive club ambiance and you have all the ingredients for a memorable experience. We truly appreciate these friends who returned to the club in September to enjoy its unique amenities in Saginaw: WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP – SAGINAW EXCHANGE CLUB – DUPERON CORPORATION- HONEST JOHN LUNCHEONS-DR. CHEF’S CORNER

Over the past few years the Saginaw Club has been using the Downtown Saginaw Farmers’ Market for our produce. I have formed good relationships with a number of local farmers and really enjoy seeing what fresh fruits and vegetables are part of the local harvest on any given day. All of the heirloom tomatoes we use are grown at Black Dog Farm in Chesaning. Beyer Farms supplies us with delicious yellow watermelons. Our good friends at Buttercrust Bakery round out the offerings of the market with breads and sweets. With the onset of October root vegetables and winter squash will be available; most of which maintain their freshness over a period of time. Acorn, buttercup, butternut, hubbard and spaghetti squash are all considered winter squash and can hold for over a month if kept in a cool place. Pie pumpkins are at the market now and there will be a lot more pumpkins as we get closer to Halloween. The Downtown Farmers’ Market is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays until October 26th. If you have a chance, stop by and support our local farmers!
