Play is central to learning; play is central to wellbeing; play is central to building community. These are key areas St George College is committed to improving under its current Strategic Plan 2017-2019. Senior Volleyball (Coach: Daniella Marciano; Umpire: Michael Rodas) Last Friday afternoon, we welcomed Cardijn College students to St George Senior Campus for our newly introduced Volleyball competition. After much strategic planning and negotiation, Daniella Marciano, Peter Karamoshos and myself have been able to convince the organising committee that St George is committed to re-joining this prestigious College and Schools’ competition – where our students get to exercise regularly for good health and brain development, showcase their fabulous sporting skills, build resilience, develop good sportsmanship skills and give their parents an opportunity to get to know one another even better in this fun, playful environment. A number of senior staff stayed back to watch St George students defeat Cardijn in two sets. continued from page 1 Junior Campus Playground, Junior Block Play Options and Shade Update As you know the Junior Campus playground has been closed since the first day of Term 1, due to an email alert I got from a parent the night before College started. On the 19th January a Board member reported to me that this playground was deemed non-compliant. On the 20th January Stephanie Kosmetos, Head of Junior Campus got onto this matter and her research informed Peter and I that we were compliant. Given there was a discrepancy from the email received by the parent before the College year started, I had no other course of action but to close this playground and issue a full playground audit on advice from AISSA. There is a 4-6 week wait for a full playground audit – especially at the start of a new school year. We have exhausted all avenues through AISSA and Kidsafe SA. Callum was due to come early Week 3, but due to sickness is now coming Tuesday Week 4. This full playground audit will make recommendations as to what is needed to make this playground safe and reopen it. Stephanie has been giving updates to parents and students and staff at campus meetings and prayer in the mornings. I have also been speaking to parents about this issue in person, as I am on this campus every day from 8am to 8.45 am to answer any questions. Please do not hesitate to talk to either of us if you have further questions.

Parents and Friends Fundraising 2016 and beyond The Parents and Friends met on Tuesday 14 February from 8.50 am to 10.00 am. The Parents and Friends are committed to fundingraising to go towards improving the playground and shade areas at the College. They will share more on this with you in due course. The College and Community is also doing what it can to support the Parents and Friends. The first fundraiser for the Parents and Friends is to cater food and drinks for the Festival Hellinika “Cinema under the Stars” event, this Friday 24 February at 7.45 pm in the Senior Campus quadrangle. On Friday 17 February, we were delighted to welcome a group of dedicated parents to their new temporary office area on the Senior Campus. Thank you to Angela Drouganis, Sasha Fotopoulos, Claire Papoulis and Nicky Andresakis for leading the catering for the Festival Hellenika event. A big thank you to Sia Patsouris for Chairing the Parents and Friends meeting and inviting Peter, Stephanie and myself to attend. Together with our Student Leadership Team, we are committed to supporting the Parents and Friends strengthen the St George College community and fundraise for the good of current and future St George College students.

Thanks to Deanne Taliangis and her students for agreeing to set up Playground/shading Fundraising Leader Boards on both campus Reception areas. Thanks also to Ms Polyxeni Levendis for preparing Minutes and Agenda distribution. Thanks to my Personal Assistant, The newly-formed “Playground Reference Group Chaired by Mr Bill Emily Giles for helping me set up and host a more comfortable area Gonis”, was set up December 2016. Dedicated Wellbeing Program on the Junior Campus – “4a” I would like to commend the work of all the Junior Campus staff under the leadership of Stephanie Kosmetos, for allowing me to introduce the same timetable as the senior campus, to allow a timetable slot called “4a wellbeing program” – which runs daily from 12.30 to 12.50pm across both campuses now. This has allowed us to develop innovative play and learning opportunities for our students – in particular to build team spirit, create shaded play opportunities, build resilience and strengthen relationships. It will also encourage students to learn more about the types of foods to eat to stay healthy and make good choices in life. Stephanie and her staff will share more stories as the year progresses. Junior Block Play Options and Shade update. Following on from our planning meetings last year, the College has used its budget resources to buy additional play equipment for our Junior Campus students to use from the start of the 2017 year. They now have sturdy, portable soccer goal posts that are put up daily, allowing soccer to be played on the JC Block. In addition, we have cleaned out the cricket pitch and bought cricket sets for the children to play cricket at lunch – they are very much enjoying this. Further the toilet area was cleaned up and Paul Pavlou, our College Gardener has worked his magic to improve this area.

In the last two years, we have seen this program strengthen the voice of our students, under her brilliant stewardship. On Wednesday 15 February after prayer, we congratulated the following four students on the Junior Campus for having been elected as the Student Representative Council (SRC) representatives for the Junior Campus. Kelly Pridmore to run as a trial in 2016 for the whole year, where each class accessed one extra mathematics lesson a week. This year Peter Karamoshos will be working with each of the Year 1 to Year 4 classes on the Junior Campus. As well as teaching engaging enrichment mathematics activities to challenge these students, he will be identifying and inviting a couple of students from each year level to partake in the prestigious Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and higher-order problem solving program.

This year, we have a particular focus on enhancing the academic achievements of our students. Subject teachers, Home Group teachers and Heads of House will work closely with students in two ways: helping them gain the specific knowledge content within each subject, and setting up positive work habits to maximise their Parent/Student/Teacher interviews effectiveness. I encourage parents to use these statements as conversation starters with their children. Building good study practices is essential if students are to achieve to their very best, so it’s important parents and teachers are reinforcing the same messages. Formal feedback on Academic Progress Parents and students can expect regular feedback regarding academic progress in the form of test grades and assignment and project results. Formal feedback regarding student progress will take two forms: parent/student/teacher interviews and Term Reports. The schedule of formal feedback was included in the recent letter that was emailed to parents which also included information regarding the Australian Curriculum and Assessment

copy. The partnership between parents and the school is essential if students are to do their best, so we look forward to sharing ideas and strategies at these interviews. How the Achievement Standards are used to assess student progress from Year 1 to Year 10. Students will be assessed in each subject according to specific Achievement Standards. Students will be graded on a five point scale, from A to E. Tasks in each subject will challenge students to demonstrate their extent of knowledge, depth of understanding and sophistication of skills. The Achievement Standards are very different from the Content Descriptions. Content Descriptions outline what teachers are expected to teach. As an example, here is the list of the Achievement Standards for Science in Year 6. By the end of Year 6, students should be able to:

1 compare and classify different types of observable changes to materials 2 analyse requirements for the transfer of electricity and describe how energy can be transformed from one form to another when generating electricity. 3 explain how natural events cause rapid change to Earth’s surface. 4 describe and predict the effect of environmental changes on individual living things 5 explain how scientific knowledge helps us to solve problems and inform decisions and identify historical and cultural contributions 6 follow procedures to develop investigable questions and design investigations into simple cause-and-effect relationships. 7 identify variables to be changed and measured and describe potential safety risks when planning methods. 8 collect, organise and interpret their data, identifying where improvements to their methods or research could improve the data. 9 describe and analyse relationships in data using appropriate representations and construct multimodal texts to communicate ideas, methods and findings.

A “C” grade means that a student has demonstrated satisfactory achievement of what is expected against the Achievement Standard for the year level in which the student is placed. The Australian Curriculum enables high expectations to be set for each student and the achievement standards have been designed to ensure that they are challenging and contribute to all students receiving a quality education. Hence, to be awarded a “C” grade using these standards represents a significant achievement.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Miss Stephanie Kosmetos Lesson 4A After 4 weeks at school, lesson 4A has been a real hit for the students on the Junior Campus. Lesson 4A is our daily Pastoral Care Program at 12.30-12.50pm that groups our students in R-4 and brings them together to foster a sense of belonging and enhances student centred support through a variety of activities. Lesson 4A is further defined as our Wellbeing/Resilience Program to:  Develop relationships – acceptance and inclusion  Instil core values – cooperation, respect, trust, responsibility, kindness  Participate – in innovative and creative activities  Encourage – having fun and fostering lasting relationships

Before School The Junior Campus bell rings at 8.40am and duty of care commences at 8.20am. We ask that students arriving at school before 8.20am wait outside their classroom building until the teachers open their classroom doors for students to enter. Prior to entering classrooms, teachers are in there planning and preparing which is valuable time to staff who arrive early. I trust parents support us in this by waiting outside classrooms until doors are opened by teachers. Drive Through Zone I would like to remind all parents once again of our duty-of-care requirements. To alleviate the congestion of traffic at the Junior Campus before and after school, parents are reminded that they can enter the staff car parking driveway between the campus and the church to drop off children and exit via Kintore Lane. We remind parents that you are not to leave your vehicles parked unattended after morning prayer. There is staff on duty in drivethrough to assist students entering or leaving the school grounds. The safety and welfare of all our students is of paramount concern and we ask that you assist us in this matter. After school, parents must stay in their car whilst in ‘queue’. Please remind friends and grandparents of this rule, as some park and then enter the school grounds, causing great angst in the traffic line. Teachers are on duty every afternoon to monitor student movement and your cooperation with staff will help the drive-through area to be functional and safe.

On Valentine’s Day, 14 February, the House of Sparta in collaboration with the Early Learning Centre organised a fundraiser for Heart Research. The whole College across both campuses was encouraged to wear RED and play for a healthy heart. Students and staff did not disappoint as there was a sea of red everywhere including Rose Street! The senior campus Spartans holding red balloons made their way to the Junior campus to play various games with their younger peers. Our motto for this day was "play together for a healthy heart". The enthusiastic smiles of our junior peers when they spotted the seniors with the red balloons was priceless! They then enjoyed their recess time play with the senior Spartans. Red Heart Day raised $440.50 for the Heart Research Foundation.

Students must download the UMAT 2017 Information Booklet before registering. UMAT is a test that is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into the medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs at undergraduate level at the universities listed on the website.
