Using the Microsoft Windows XP Conversion Kit The Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition Conversion Kit enables you to convert your computers from the preinstalled version of the Microsoft Windows Vista® operating system to the Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating system. This Conversion Kit consists of these instructions and the bootable (startable) Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition disc (hereafter referred to as the Windows XP installation disc). You use the Windows XP installation disc to start the conversion procedure. Note: You must have a DVD drive to use the Conversion Kit. If you do not have an internal DVD drive installed in your computer, you can use an external USB DVD drive.

Before you begin the conversion procedure Before you begin the conversion procedure, beware of the following: v It is recommended to create a set of Windows Vista Product Recovery discs using the tools provided on your computer should you have the need to restore the Windows Vista operating system on your computer in the future. To access the tools for creating Windows Vista Product Recovery discs, do the following: 1. Start the Windows Vista operating system. 2. Click → Start → All Programs → ThinkVantage, and then click either Create Recovery Media or Create Product Recovery Discs. © Copyright Lenovo 2008

3. Follow the instructions on the screen. Note: It is important that you label your Windows Vista Product Recovery discs when instructed to do so. Store these discs in a safe place after you create them. v During the conversion procedure, you will be given the option to use existing partitions or create new partitions. Both would result in the loss of data. Copy all important data or personal files that you want to keep onto removable media or a network drive before you start the conversion procedure.

Installing Windows XP Important: Be sure that you have read all of the information in “Before you begin the conversion procedure” on page 1.

Important information about drivers In order to configure your storage controller as RAID or set to the AHCI mode, you will be required to provide the appropriate device drivers during the installation procedure. To obtain device drivers for the ESB2 controller that is included in the chipset or for the LSI SAS Storage Controller, go to the Lenovo Support Web site at: http://www.lenovo.com/support At the Support & downloads page, scroll down to the Quick links section, click Driver Matrices (Most common files), and then follow the instructions to select your product and specific computer type. You will need to use either an installed diskette drive or an external diskette drive during the installation procedure to install these drivers in Step 3c on page 5. If you use an internal diskette drive, make sure it is connected before you start the installation procedure.

Performing the conversion procedure To convert your operating system to Windows XP, perform the following steps: Step 1. Make the DVD drive the first startup device in the startup sequence using the following procedures: a. Shut down the operating system and turn off your computer. b. Press and hold the F1 key, and then turn on the computer. When the logo screen is displayed or if you hear repeating beeps, release the F1 key. The Setup Utility program opens. Note: If the Setup Utility program does not open, shut down the computer, wait approximately five seconds, turn on the computer, and then immediately press and release the F1 key repeatedly until the Setup Utility program opens. c. Use the left and right arrow keys to select Startup from the main menu; then, from the Startup menu, select Startup Sequence. d. From the Startup Sequence [Primary] menu, do one of the following to select the DVD device that you want to use as the First Boot Device. Note: When selecting your DVD device as the First Boot Device, be aware that internal DVD drives are listed as CD drives. If you will be using a supported external DVD drive as the First Boot Device, select USB CDROM in the steps below for your choice of DVD device. v If your choice of DVD device is already listed as the First Boot Device, continue with Step 2 on page 4. v If your choice of DVD device is listed in the startup sequence as any device other than the first device, select it and press the Plus (+) key repeatedly until it is displayed as the first device. Then, continue with Step 2 on page 4. v If your choice of DVD device is listed as an excluded device, select it and press the X key one time to add it to the startup sequence. select your choice of DVD device from the startup sequence and press the Plus (+) key repeatedly until it is displayed as the first device. Then, continue with Step 2. Step 2. Prepare the computer before installing device drivers. Attention: When installing Windows XP from a disc, you must disable the AHCI mode before installing device drivers for the SATA controller. Without doing this step, the operating system displays an error and a Blue Screen when you attempt to start. a. To disable the AHCI mode, use the left and right arrow keys to select Devices from the main menu; then, from the Devices menu, select IDE Drives Setup and press Enter. b. Use the arrow keys to select SATA AHCI Enable and then press Enter to view the menu. c. Select and press Enter to disable AHCI mode. d. Press F10 to save the settings. Step 3. Insert the Windows XP installation disc. Press F10 to save. Depending on your computer model, when the save and exit message is displayed, select Yes, and then press Enter to start the computer from the Windows XP installation disc. v If you do not intend to configure your storage controller as RAID, continue with Step 4 on page 5. v To configure your storage controller as RAID or to set to the AHCI mode, complete the following steps. a. Press F6 when prompted on the Windows Setup screen to load the driver from your driver diskette. Notes: 1) The F6 option appears in the task bar of the Windows Setup screen for only a few seconds. If you miss the opportunity to press F6, restart the computer and try again.

2) Nothing will happen immediately after pressing F6. Setup will temporarily continue loading drivers. You will then be prompted with a screen asking you to load support for mass storage devices. The Windows Setup screen appears. b. Press S to specify an additional device. c. Insert the diskette containing the device drivers. For example, SATA RAID drivers include the following files: IAAHCI.INF, IAAHCI.CAT, IASTOR.INF, IASTOR.CAT, IASTOR.SYS, and TXTSETUP.OEM. Press Enter. d. Select the driver you want to load by using the up and down arrow keys to scroll though the list as the drivers may not be visible, and press Enter to load the driver. – For the SAS driver, there is only one selection. – For the SATA AHCI driver, select Intel® 631x ESB1 632x ESB SATA AHCI CONTROLLER Server/Workstation ESB2. – For the SATA RAID driver, select Intel 631x ESB1 632x ESB SATA RAID CONTROLLER Server/Workstation ESB2. – If you have no additional drivers to load, press Enter. – If you have additional drivers to load, repeat steps 3b to 3d. When you are finished loading drivers, press Enter. e. Leave the diskette in the diskette drive until the system reboots. Windows setup will need to copy the files from the diskette again to the Windows installation folders. Step 4. Press Enter to set up the Windows XP operating system. Step 5. Read the license terms. If you agree with the terms, press F8. If you do not agree with the terms, follow the instructions on the screen. Step 6. If no operating system is installed, continue with Step 7 on page 6. If an operating system is installed, a repair screen appears. Press Escape.

Step 7. A screen appears showing partitioned and unpartitioned space on your computer. v If no operating system is installed, select unpartitioned space. Press Enter. v If an operating system is installed, you might be see a partition where the current operating system is installed. Highlight that partition and press D. Press Enter, then press L. Press Enter to set up Windows on the selected partition. Step 8. Select either Format the partition using the NTFS file system or Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick). The formatting and installation procedure will take some time depending on your selection and the partition size. v If you have installed device drivers in Step 3 on page 4, you will be asked to insert driver diskettes again. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows XP will restart. Step 9. When the conversion procedure is complete, the Welcome to Microsoft Windows screen opens. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows setup. Step 10. After you have completed the Windows setup, you can restore the original startup sequence. If you installed the drivers for RAID or AHCI, you also need to reenable the AHCI mode. To start the Setup Utility, do the following: a. Shut down your operating system and turn off your computer. b. Press and hold the F1 key, and then turn on your computer. c. When the logo screen is displayed, press and release the F1 key. The Setup Utility program opens.

Note: If the Setup Utility program does not open, shut down the computer, wait approximately five seconds, turn on the computer, and then immediately press and release the F1 key repeatedly until the Setup Utility program opens. d. Use the arrow keys to select Startup from the main menu and then press Enter. From the Startup menu, select Startup Sequence and then press Enter. e. Use the arrow keys to select the order for the boot device and then press Enter. f. To disable the AHCI mode: v Use the left and right arrow keys to select Devices from the main menu; then, from the Devices menu, select IDE Drives Setup and press Enter. v Use the arrow keys to select SATA AHCI Enable and then press Enter to view the menu. v Select and press Enter to enable the AHCI mode. v Press F10 to save the settings. g. Press F10 to save and exit the Setup Utility. h. When prompted, select Yes in the Setup Confirmation window and then press Enter. Step 11. Install any additional device drivers. See “Important information about drivers” on page 2 for instructions on obtaining device drivers.
