MicroStrategy, Apache Hive and the Hortonworks Sandbox V2.0 November 8, 2013

Introduction Summary MicroStrategy uses Apache Hive (via ODBC connection) as the defacto standard for SQL access in Hadoop. Establishing a connection from MicroStrategy to Hadoop and the Hortonworks Sandbox is fairly straight forward. While the MicroStrategy Analytics Platform provides a comprehensive set of analytics and business intelligence capabilities, the Analytics Desktop is one component of the platform that gives business users an easy and convenient option to get started with MicroStrategy. The process described here is for MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop installed on Windows, but the approach is similar when using the MicroStrategy Analytics Platform with Hortonworks on non-Windows platforms (Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX). Overview 1. Download the Hortonworks Sandbox 2. Download the 100% Free MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop product 3. Get Started!

Step 1 – Install MicroStrategy Download MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop from www.microstrategy.com/free. Install MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop on a Windows machine.

Step 2 – Install Hortonworks ODBC Connector Install 32-bit Hortonworks ODBC Connector for Windows and configure it with the right Hadoop IP address, port number, database name and the HIVE server type.

Enter your username and password for your Hadoop system. At this point, only the username is necessary. You can also enter a display name for your database connection (in this case – Hortonworks Connection).

6. Click “OK” and to add your DSN and close the Database Connection window.
