Reports Superintendent Dr. Markwardt stated we are in the process of putting together everything for next year. Obviously the High School project is the major component and we are working with the architects and contractors. We are also looking at the other buildings in the District. We hope to have the schedule finalized by next week. There have been no decisions made yet, but we are close. Dr. Markwardt reported that were a few staff still to hire. It has been a very busy summer. Beachwood Federation of Teachers No one attended the meeting. Student Council President – Wesley Darvin Wes inquired about the starting time at the High School. He had been asked to remind the Board about the morning academy used by students needing extra help. He said many of the students cannot stay at the end of the day to work with teachers. Board Members Mr. Rosen thanked his fellow Board members for the spirited and enlightening Board training. Public Comment Karen Tindel, 25640 Halburton, Beachwood Mrs. Tindel stated she has one student at the Middle School and one at the High School. She said like Wes she has the same concerns about the morning academy. Mrs. Tindel said it is a wonderful service that is offered and asked the Board to please reconsider doing away with it. Jessica Vendetti, 23606 East Groveland, Beachwood Mrs. Vendetti has a student going into first grade at Bryden and is concerned with the extended school day. She said her child comes home from school tired and hungry. Mrs. Vendetti said she is concerned about how fatigue will impact her child’s learning. She stated that unstructured time can be valuable. She coaches a recreation soccer team and her daughter was too tired to practice. Mrs. Vendetti said there is not much educational research on costs to students for extended day. As a parent she can easily say what the costs are. Mrs. Vendetti said she has polled other parents in Beachwood and other school districts. She says students in Beachwood are getting a great education and she feels if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Mrs. Vendetti states there should be a balance for students with unstructured time with family, walking the dog, and playing in the back yard. Dr. Markwardt stated he agrees with her comments and said they parallel conversations with the administrative staff that day. The administrators want a good schedule in a holistic sense that will be meaningful for students. As far as the extended schedule what we are hoping to achieve and want to see is the maximum benefit for students and how to fulfill it. If an earlier start means a more qualitative learning environment for students we want to make a decision based on what is best for them. Dr. Markwardt said a decision will have to be made soon and will probably be only a slight extension to the school day. Mrs. Vendetti inquired if there has been a logistical decision or discussion about fatigue and hunger and would there be less homework to adjust for the longer day. She asked if there is a plan for a designated snack time. Mrs. Vendetti said as a parent she will support the decision made and will make adjustments at home. Dr. Markwardt stated the discussion is not being based in terms of academics only, but includes nurturing, down time and how all this will be met. Mrs. Vendetti said she appreciates that the concerns are being considered. There are a lot of parents that share similar concerns and are nervous. Dr. Markwardt said the nervousness should subside in about a week. Mr. Rosen stated that Karen Carmen reached out to Doug Levin to tour through the recreation center and pool.
