STEPHEN KING’S CHILLING THRILLER

MISERY

WELCOME Staging a thriller by the master of the genre, Stephen King, is a rare opportunity and we’re excited to bring you something quite different. Director Rachel Ditor has given our longtime Props Master Michael Gall and his team the chance to really show off their talent for special effects. Hold your neighbour’s hand if you need to, as we aim to have you jumping out of your seats!

On behalf of the Arts Club Theatre Company, I’d like to wish you all a happy New Year! 2018 marks a year of transition for the Arts Club, and we are grateful to our audience at home and out here on the road for taking this journey with us. As we move into the second half of my final season as Artistic Managing Director, Incoming Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran is putting the final touches on her very first season with the company. Stay tuned for the announcement of the 2018/2019 lineup—there’s a lot to look forward to!

Also on tour right now, the cast and crew of Onegin are enjoying an extended season. They began in the fall with a sold-out run at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria and then spent the holiday season at home on the Granville Island Stage. They will hit up Calgary, Edmonton, and Whitehorse for the month of January, then head back this way to move and shake B.C. audiences some more, before finishing the tour in Saskatoon this April. As the Georgia Straight said, “You’re lucky to be alive right now… because you get to see Onegin.” Bill Millerd Artistic Managing Director

Misery is a show we’ve all been looking forward to for some time.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES I have been an avid reader my whole life. For us lot, curling up with a good book is one of life’s greatest pleasures. I went through a phase in my teens of loving horror stories, Stephen King first among my favourites. There was something delicious to my friends and I about being too scared to turn the page and too thrilled to put the book down. And being able to tell a good scary story live? Well, that was the best. Delivering the goriest parts like a punch line to a joke was an enviable skill. Misery provides that same good sport of knowing something icky is going

to happen and looking forward to it anyway. On top of that, the play version of the story also gives us the good sport of compelling live performances. Our production of Misery features two outstanding actors. Andrew McNee, who plays our stranded author Paul Sheldon, is a magnetic performer. Funny, honest, and inventive—you can’t take your eyes off him. And playing Annie Wilkes is Lucia Frangione, one of the most fearless artists I know, willing to risk everything to tell a great story. I trust you will enjoy them as much as they enjoy sharing with you this classic thriller about one writer’s number one fan… Rachel Ditor

ABOUT THE CREATORS Stephen King is the author of over 50 best-selling novels, among them Misery, Salem’s Lot, The Shining, The Stand, Pet Cemetery, Cujo, Christine, Firestarter, It, The Green Mile, and 11/22/63. Widely regarded as the modern master of horror fiction, he has also written around 200 published short stories and collaborated on numerous successful film and television adaptations of his work. King was born in 1947, in Portland, Maine, the state where many of his stories are set and where he continues to primarily reside with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King. His first published short story was “The Glass Floor,” which appeared in Startling Mystery Stories in 1967; his first novel, Carrie, was published by Doubleday in 1973. King has also won dozens of prominent awards, most notably the O. Henry Award in 1996 and the National Medal of the Arts for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2015. William Goldman is a novelist, memoirist, playwright, and screenwriter. Born in Chicago in 1931, Goldman published his first novel, The Temple of Gold, in 1957; subsequent novels include Your Turn to Curtsy, My Turn to Bow, Soldier in the Rain, The Princess Bride, and Marathon Man. Among Goldman’s most well-known screenplays—spanning a 50-year career in Hollywood—are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (for which he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), The Stepford Wives, All the President’s Men (for which he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay), Misery, Dolores Claiborne, and Absolute Power. In addition to Misery, which he adapted for the stage from his earlier screenplay, his works for the theatre include Blood, Sweat, and Stanley Poole and A Family Affair, both co-written with his brother, James Goldman.
