A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR BROWN UNIVERSITY AND THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND UNIVERSITY RELATIONS TO RESCIND THE BROWN MORNING MAIL POLICY Sponsored by: Clay Wertheimer ’10, Communications Chair 1.
WHEREAS Brown Morning Mail is the university’s only centralized means of distributing information to the entire campus, and

WHEREAS the new policy restricting announcements based on the size of the venue hampers the important service that Morning Mail provides, and
3.
WHEREAS, the size of the venue does not determine the value of an event to the Brown community, and
4.
WHEREAS, attempting to reduce the length of Morning Mail will not increase readership among students, and
5.
WHEREAS, undergraduates have issued largely negative responses to the new policy, as demonstrated by Brown Daily Herald coverage1, the Brown Daily Herald editorials board2, and a Brown Daily Herald opinions column3 and
6.
WHEREAS, UCS is aware that the University is in the process of creating a new, more comprehensive calendaring system, and
7.
WHEREAS, until a new system is implemented Brown must maintain a centralized means informing the student body.

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Undergraduate Council of Students requests the Office of Public Affairs and University Relations to immediately rescind its new policy and allow all University recognized groups to post to Morning Mail, and
2.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that if the Office of Public Affairs and University Relations denies this request, that the Undergraduate Council of Students receive a written explanation by February 20, 2009.
