Adventure Travel Stories Around the World on a Motorcycle: 1928 to 1936 by Zoltán Sulkowsky The year was 1928 when two young Hungarians decided to travel around the world on a motorcycle. Like Robert Fulton, whose circumnavigation of the globe is chronicled in his 1937 book One Man Caravan, Sulkowsky thought his was the first around-the-world journey on a motorcycle. The trip, on a HarleyDavidson motorcycle with sidecar, started in Paris, France. During the next eight years Sulkowsky and his friend Gyula Bartha traveled through Europe, Africa, the Mideast, India, Australia, southeast Asia, China, Japan, North and South America, and back to Europe. They earned enough money to keep traveling by selling photographs and accounts of their experiences and giving lectures in the cities they visited along the way. Sulkowsky gives a very clear-eyed view of the world in the 1930s—a world where the colonizing influence of Europe had affected much of Africa and Asia. He describes in detail the overwhelming effect the British had on Indian culture and contrasts that with countries farther east where the trappings of European dominance barely reached beyond the major cities. Sulkowsky and Bartha experienced the riches of sultans, witnessed primitive cultures and extreme poverty in remote villages, traveled through wilderness with the ever-present danger of wild animals, and traversed roads of all descriptions. This intelligent and engaging book offers a unique worldview between the World Wars, flavored by a sampling of the great diversity of cultures and the wide variety of human life that exists on this planet. Hdbd., 6 x 9 in., 413 pp., b/w illus. A-AWM $29.95 Endless Horizon: A Very Messy Motorcycle Journey Around the World by Dan Walsh In 2005, motorcycle journalist Dan Walsh rode out of London on a Yamaha XT Desert Rat, headed for Africa. From Dakar to Ghana to South Africa, then on to North and South America, he kept his readers posted about his travels, along the way earning the label “the savior of motorcycle writing.” Whether he’s delivering judgments (“Chile will always be South America’s supermodel sister—very beautiful but too long, too skinny, and too expensive to ride, and despite the groovy exterior, unpleasantly right-wing underneath.”) or just describing another day on the road (“I get my bum pinched by a tranny, my pocket picked by a grifter, and get a gun pulled on me by a one-eyed, onearmed midget who’s upset cause I winked at him.”), these reports from the gonzo frontier of motorcycle travel are never less than Technicolor, adrenalinesoaked, and coruscatingly funny. Lyrical, edgy, fraught with danger, despair, and surreal highs and lows—this is a travelogue like no other. This book reveals Dan Walsh as the rightful heir to Ted Simon as the preeminent biker-rebel of our generation. Hdbd., 6-1/4 x 9-1/4 in., 375 pp., color illus. B-ENDH $28.00

Wit & Wisdom

Mondo Enduro by Austin Vince, Editor Mondo Enduro is not your typical account of an around-the-world motorcycling adventure. In 1995, seven young British chaps set off from London on Suzuki DR350s for a journey that would take them across Europe and Asia to the far eastern edge of Siberia, then from Anchorage to Santiago, Chile, followed by South Africa back home to London. They called themselves Mondo Enduro and this book is the trip log they kept throughout their journey. With all members of the team contributing daily entries, each taking a different day, the writing is fresh and immediate, and full of wonderfully understated British humor. What sets this group apart from many long-distance travelers is their unpretentiousness, their refreshingly low-tech approach, their gusto and their marvelous upbeat attitude. Their little successes become triumphs, their setbacks are just aggravations, today’s scenery or tonight’s tasty meal is the best yet. They marvel at people calling their journey an epic undertaking when to them it’s just a year-long holiday. Their limited finances mandate a very frugal lifestyle on the road, one of “self-catering” and “rough campsites.” By not taking the normal hotel and restaurant mode of travel, they meet a wide range of characters, and are continually impressed with the generosity that people around the world extended to them as perfect strangers. However, the flip and casual veneer of Mondo Enduro belies the inner strength of the team members as they meet and surmount several extraordinary challenges that come their way. No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels by Jay Dobyns & Nils Johnson-Shelton Here, from Jay Dobyns, the first federal agent to infiltrate the inner circle of the outlaw Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, is the inside story of the twenty-one-month operation that almost cost him his family, his sanity, and his life. Getting shot in the chest as a rookie agent, bartering for machine guns, throttling down the highway at 100 mph, and responding to a full-scale, bloody riot between the Hells Angels and their rivals, the Mongols—these are just a few of the experiences Dobyns recounts in this true story. Dobyns leaves no stone of his harrowing journey unturned. Hardest of all is leading a double life, which has him torn between his devotion to his wife and children, and his pledge to become the first federal agent ever to be “fully patched” into the Angels’ near-impregnable ranks. His act is so convincing that he comes within a hairsbreadth of losing himself. Eventually, he realizes that just as he’s been infiltrating the Hells Angels, they’ve been infiltrating him. And just as they’re not all bad, he’s not all good. Hall presents them as they really were: hard living, hard loving, hard drinking, hard fighting rebels, but also hardworking, patriotic, loyal, and lovable characters, and a band of brothers whose outlandish behavior forged an all-American outlaw legend. Alphabetical by Make BMW BMW R90S by Ian Falloon Although in production for only three years, the R90S was the most significant post-war production BMW motorcycle. Its release coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the BMW boxer motorcycle, and started a new era for the boxer twin. Prior to the R90S BMW motorcycles were idiosyncratic, expensive, and primarily luxury touring machines designed to appeal to the older rider. Although the new-generation R75/5 did much to change the staid image that existed during the 1960s, the R75/5 still couldn’t compete with the new high performance Japanese Superbikes that came in the early 1970s. That all changed when Bob Lutz persuaded BMW’s conservative management to sanction the development of the R90S, a sporting machine that could take on the best in the world. As ace BMW tuner Udo Gietl says, “The R90S was a pivotal bike for BMW. It showed the world that the ‘always’ black bike could be very pretty, and win races. The R90S provided a new face for BMW motorcycles around the world and is to BMW as the 300SL Gull Wing is to Mercedes-Benz—an example of the perfect combination of timing and product.” Hdbd., 8-5/8 x 10-1/4 in., 128 pp., color illus. A-R90S $24.95 BMW Boxer Twins Bible: All Models 1970-1995 by Ian Falloon Before the /5 series, BMW had a reputation for producing expensive and idiosyncratic touring motorcycles. But the /5 changed that. Although still expensive, the market was opened to a new world of riders, and during the 1970s the air-cooled boxer evolved into the ground-breaking R90S and R100RS. These were among the first motorcycles with factory-fitted fairings and they also offered class-leading performance. Even when BMW decided to discontinue the twins in favor of the new four-cylinder K-series in 1984, demand for the older boxers forced BMW to reconsider. The boxer was resurrected and continued for more than a decade. Hdbd., 8 x 10 in., 160 pp., color illus. BMW Motorcycles: The Evolution of Excellence by Kevin Ash This is the fascinating story of one of the world’s most admired and enduring motorcycle companies. Early in the last century, driven by an obsession for quality and reliability, BMW applied the knowledge gained from its manufacture of airplane engines to build a breed of motorcycles that aimed a notch above the crowd. From its early racing victories, the company learned how to make tough, reliable machines that would win races—and allow motorcyclists to go anywhere in the world with confidence. The book details the history of BMW Motorrad, from its inception in 1917 to the present. During its life, the company has endured wars, post-war restrictions on its production, world recessions, and intense competition from formidable Japanese manufacturers. But in spite of the fierce marketplace in which it operates, the company has survived and flourished, owing in no small part to the deeply ingrained principles that have guided the company from its beginning: a passion for quality and reliability, and a willingness to apply new motorcycle technologies to achieve those objectives. BMW of the twenty-first century is a company whose pace of innovation and new product introductions is stunning. Hdbd., 9.13 x 6.8 in., 174 pp., color illus. Allen and Mark Gardiner put together a wonderful book that chronicles BMW’s racing efforts from the beginning... Great reading, great pictures and a great story combine to make a very enjoyable read.” —Backroads Here is the intriguing story of one of the world’s most admired and enduring motorcycle companies, and how their fortunes were molded by a determination to win races. Early in the last century, the fledgling company decided to test its products, demonstrate the quality of its designs, and showcase German technology by winning competitions. That determination has lasted to this day, as BMW has remained a formidable competitor in various venues of motorcycle racing. The book covers the company’s early mutation from aircraft engine builder to producer of reliable, highquality motorcycles. Its development of supercharged engines, advanced suspension systems, and many other innovations led to its dominance of various race competitions at different times, with many of those technologies making their way into production motorcycles. BMWs have long been known for reliability and endurance; it is precisely those characteristics which gave the company the deciding advantage in sidecar racing, endurance competitions, and Superbike racing. Alphabetical by Make Buell 25 Years of Buell by Court Canfield & Dave Gess This book was produced to commemorate Buell Motor Company’s 25th anniversary. Illustrated by hundreds of photographs from private collections and corporate archives, it covers Buell’s history from inception to the present. Erik Buell is, of course, at the center of this inspiring story, but the company has thrived not just because of one energetic, visionary man, but because that man was able to inspire others around him to give 110 percent to their common objectives. This story is as much about the people of Buell as it is the motorcycles of Buell. Both, as you will learn, are remarkable. Court Canfield stumbled onto Buell in the late 1980s when you could hold an owners convention in a phone booth. After buying his first Buell, a 1990 RS-1200, Canfield has ridden Buells in 44 states and has become the “acknowledged unofficial Buell storyteller.” He tends to be drawn easily into challenges like circling the United States on a Buell or riding a Buell halfway across the country and into the Guggenheim Museum for “The Art of The Motorcycle” exhibit. He maintains close contact with Buell owners around the globe. Dave Gess has been involved with Buell Motorcycles since buying a used car from Erik Buell in 1983. When Buell Motorcycles got started it was quickly obvious that letting Gess turn a wrench was a mistake but he helped the project along by generating publicity and promotional materials. A photographer by profession, Gess not only took publicity pictures but also documented the design and building of all the early Buells. These early photographs and stories from the first 15 years of Buell provide an insider’s view of the company. Hdbd., 8-1/2 x 10-1/2 in., 176 pp., color illus. A-BUELL $24.95

Motorcycle Dream Garages by Lee Klancher You want to be on your motorcycle on the open road—but if you can’t, then the next best place is the garage. Maintenance & Technical How to: Advanced Custom Motorcycle Wiring by Jeff Zielinski The one job that even the best mechanics avoid is wiring. Those worries are now over with the introduction of this new book from Wolfgang Publications. This book makes wiring-fromscratch, or installing a harness kit, very understandable and non-intimidating, even for the first-time builder. It uses chapters one and two to cover the basics of DC electricity; as well as batteries, starters, and alternators. Chapter three provides detailed schematics and repair information on the factory wiring harness used before and after 1994. The rest of the book describes the various harness options available, and to show step-by-step how a wiring harness is installed in a custom motorcycle. All the standard questions are answered, such as: Is it better to build a harness from scratch or install a ready-made harness kit? Which kit is best for a particular situation? What’s the easiest way to install the harness and route all those wires inside the top tube and the handle bars? Includes over 300 color photos and diagrams to illustrate all the latest products, all the basic circuits, simple and complex wiring schematics, and a complete start-to-finish custom wiring installation. And in several hands-on projects, he takes readers on a guided tour of their vehicle’s electrical system, along the way giving clear, step-bystep instructions for diagnosing specific problems. Art of the Chopper: William J Clinton Presidential Library Edition by Tom Zimberoff Based on the best-selling books by Tom Zimberoff, the Clinton Presidential Library is proud to present Art of the Chopper, their first collection of motorcycles created as comtemporary art and curated for exhibition. This unlikely exhibit initially came about from a simple question asked by a staffer at a library exhibition brainstorming session. It ultimately resulted in a fantastic display of chopper art in the Clinton Presidential Library. The superbly photographed choppers in this book tell the story of late 20th century American art in a new and vibrant way. It would be difficult to find anyone more qualified than Tom Zimberoff to perfectly capture images of this uniquely American rolling sculpture and the artists who created them. Riding Skills Stayin’ Safe: The Art and Science of Riding Really Well by Larry Grodsky Larry Grodsky devoted his life to motorcycle safety. Through the riding courses he taught and his “Stayin’ Safe” columns in Rider magazine (from 1988 until his untimely death in 2006), he helped thousands of motorcyclists improve their skills and their ability to ride really well. This collection of Grodsky’s columns reveals his ability to illuminate complex and sometimes highly technical subjects with an entertaining and personal style, spiced with his trademark wry wit and keen observations of human behavior. A master teacher, Grodsky was constantly learning from his students, always striving to find the best way to lead riders toward mastery of their two-wheeled vehicles. Many of his columns focus on helping riders develop specific skills (complete with practice exercises), while others deal with the riding environment and riders’ mental processes. While it is packed with information useful to both novice and experienced motorcyclists, this book is not structured as a how-to guide to motorcycle proficiency. Rather, it is a collection of thoughtful essays to be read and savored individually. Readers will be rewarded by the beautifully written stories of a great motorcycle riding instructor who has left his mark on a generation of grateful riders. “In More Proficient Motorcycling, we learn more of the human equation. How our mental processes and physical limitations affect our riding, and how to train ourselves to take maximum advantage of our abilities.” —Motorcycle Consumer News Proficient Motorcycling and More by David Hough Word-of-mouth made Proficient Motorcycling into a topselling book for safe street-riding techniques. Because one book could hardly contain all his words of wisdom, Hough put together a second book, More Proficient Motorcycling, which goes deeper into riding skills and accident avoidance tactics. The Upper Half of the Motorcycle On the Unity of Rider and Machine by Bernt Spiegel In this book, motorcycling enthusiasts will discover new insights, unique perspectives, and invaluable advice that will challenge and improve their riding style, making it much more satisfying and enjoyable. The author’s metaphor considers the rider and the motorcycle as a single unit, the rider being the upper half. The ultimate goal for the riders is the integration of the man-machine interface and development of their skills to the point of virtuosity. The book opens with a fascinating exploration of the development and workings of the human brain and how we learn and apply what we learn. The second section describes the interaction between our built-in programs and our conscious actions. The third section discusses the “integration” of rider and motorcycle—and the remarkable improvement in one’s riding proficiency when rider and motorcycle begin to perform as an integrated unit rather than as a bundle of cargo on a means of conveyance. The fourth section describes self-training techniques to achieve higher levels of performance, and the fifth section provides specific recommendations for practical training. It’s absolutely packed with useful tips that are presented in a factual and very readable style with an additional bonus: lots of Reg’s adventures and lessons learned from the track and a lifetime of motorcycling are woven in to keep things interesting and relevant.” —WebBikeWorld.com Former AMA racing champion Reg Pridmore, known worldwide for his popular CLASS Motorcycle Schools, brings his decades of experience on the track, street, and classroom to the readers of this new riding skills book. A long-time proponent of the value of smoothness, control, and body-steering, Pridmore’s insightful text explains how the techniques that helped him win championships can help everyday motorcyclists and budding racers become better, safer riders. After reviewing the basics, Pridmore shows how to focus on control in cornering, braking, and acceleration. There are also chapters devoted to riding psychology, throttle management, shifting and body positioning, as well as tips on bike setup and accident avoidance. A-MCX2 $24.95 Maximum Control: Mastering Your Heavyweight Bike by Pat Hahn As anyone who’s been on one knows, big bikes— Harleys, dressers, tourers, cruisers—handle differently than smaller bikes. They have different centers of gravity; they steer more slowly; they put you in a different riding position; and riding one—especially riding it well—requires different skills. This book is aimed at helping owners of such motorcycles— bikes with big engines, long wheelbases, and a lot of weight—get the best ride out of them. Maximum Control addresses every aspect of riding—steering, positioning, braking, and carrying a passenger or heavy load. With clear information on differences in equipment—brakes, engine, drive system, even tires—this expert, accessible guide provides everything you need to know to handle your bike like a pro. The outcome will be, as promised, Maximum Control—and the ride of your life. Sftbd., 8-1/4 x 10-1/2 in., 155 pp., color illus. Riding Skills Riding in the Zone: Advanced Techniques for Skillful Motorcycling by Ken Condon If you want to learn new techniques for riding more skillfully, Riding in the Zone is made for you! This newest book in Whitehorse Press’ Riding Skills series will help you develop the physical and mental skills that will enable you to ride with more confidence and joy. The included DVD demonstrates many of the concepts and techniques discussed in the book and describes practice drills to help you apply the lessons quickly and easily to street riding. We all know that riding motorcycles is fun, but Ken Condon maintains that a special mental state beyond simple pleasure awaits riders who achieve a high level of riding skill and mastery. It’s the experience of being physically and mentally present in the moment, where every sense is sharply attuned to the ride. Your body responds with precise, fluid movements; you feel in balance, your muscles are relaxed, and it seems as though every input you make is an expression of your mastery of the sport. Some people call this being “in the groove” or “in the zone.” This book shows you how to get there. Written for early-intermediate to early-advanced riders, Riding in the Zone offers valuable insight into perfecting each rider’s own personal riding style for maximum enjoyment and satisfaction. In a clear, highly visual style with detailed diagrams and extensive full-color photos and illustrations, Condon identifies the many factors that help you enter “the zone.” With more than three decades of motorcycling under his belt, Ken Condon has had many opportunities to experience the zone—while road racing, dirt biking, and even commuting in heavy traffic—and help students find it as well. He will show you how the ability to ride “in the zone” goes hand in hand with mastering basic motorcycling skills and achieving mental and emotional control. Sftbd., 8 x 10 in., 144 pp., color illus.
