Mr. Dwight D. Jones, Superintendent, Clark County (NV) School District Total No. of Students: 303,448 Total Annual Budget: $3.1 Billion In September 2010, the Board of Trustees for the Clark County School District selected Dwight D. Jones as their superintendent, a role he officially began on December 15, 2010. Previously, Mr. Jones served as Colorado's commissioner of education for three and a half years. Under his guidance, the departments refocused its efforts to better serve and support the field, partner with schools and districts on various initiatives, and strive to direct resources and intervention strategies to the districts with the most need. Dwight D. Jones' entire career has been devoted to public education, starting as an elementary school teacher in Junction City, Kansas, and later serving as principal for elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Wichita, Kansas. Following his time in Wichita, Mr. Jones was an operational vice president for Edison Schools, where he supervised 11 schools in Kansas, Missouri, and Maryland. He served in this role for three years before becoming assistant superintendent and later superintendent of Fountain-Fort Carson School District (Fountain, Colorado), during which time he earned statewide recognition for narrowing and eliminating achievement gaps related to children from ethnic minority and low economic backgrounds. Mr. Jones has served on a number of governor-appointed commissions and a variety of nonprofit boards, including Denver Children's Hospital, McREL, High School Futures, and the Southwest Comprehensive Center's advisory board. He is also a member of the Education Commission of the States steering committee. In 2009, Mr. Jones participated on an international benchmarking advisory board co-sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. In 2010, he co-chaired a National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE) Blue Ribbon Panel on the inclusion of clinical experiences in teacher preparation programs. In July 2009, the Education and Resource Development Institute recognized Dwight D. Jones for his work by presenting him the "Mike Kneale – Excellence in Education" Administrator of the Year Award. He was also the first recipient of the National Middle School Association's "Impact Award," and in 2010 he was inducted into the Troops to Teachers Hall of Fame. In 2011 Mr. Jones' alma mater honored his contributions to education by designating him as an Alumni Fellow for Kansas State University's College of Education.
