Singing Freedom: Music and the Struggle for Freedom in South Africa Singing Freedom tells the story of the role of music during the struggle against apartheid. The music includes a diversity of early compositions; various freedom songs that were an integral part of the lives of freedom fighters; and more recent hip-hop music from the Cape Flats.

Jews of Struggle: The Jewish National Movement in the USSR, 1967–1989 A powerful exhibition on the Soviet Jews’ struggle for the right to emigrate to their motherland, Israel between 1967-1989. The exhibit focuses on the ‘refuseniks’, those whose immigration applications had been rejected, and the methods they employed in their battle with the Soviet authorities.

There’s something I must tell you: An exhibition by Sue Williamson Six iconic women involved in the struggle against apartheid chat with their Born Free granddaughters about their turbulent pasts, and what it means to be free in South Africa today.

William Kentridge: The Refusal of Time (In collaboration with Philip Miller, Catherine Meyburgh and Peter Galison) Famous scientific theories are brought to life in this collaborative exhibition. William Kentridge’s recent installations integrate moving image, sound, theatre and sculptural elements to explore themes of science, globalisation, colonialism and memory.

From African Earth: Celebrating our African Clay Vessel Heritage Did you know that Africa has an age-old tradition of creating pit-fired ceramic vessels by hand? Time and Again: A retrospective exhibition by Penny Siopis Take a trip down memory lane with contemporary artist, Penny Siopis, whose retrospective exhibition Time and Again encompasses over 30 years of work. Many of her iconic artworks have become part of the country’s heritage.

Welcome to Museum Night Cape Town’s inaugural Museum Night is free and open to the public, allowing you to walk between the museums in and around the Company’s Gardens until late. In addition to the exciting exhibitions on display you can expect an unforgettable programme of performances throughout the night.

The Thursdays, in partnership with Iziko Museums of South Africa are proud to present

Submit this form at one of the participating Iziko venues on Museum Night (once you’re done using the programme of course). Submission boxes can be found at the entrances each museum, where you can also sign up for membership to a number of the museums' "Friends" groups.

Enjoy your night, but please be mindful of the spaces you are in and the cultural assets around you. Works on exhibition are not to be touched. You are encouraged to take photographs of each other and the museum spaces - but please don’t photograph individual art works. No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed within museums. Backpacks, large bags, and umbrellas are also to be left at reception.
