Suggestions: ● Begin planning as a freshman. Notes: ● Liability insurance is obtained through membership in Education Minnesota. The cost is $30 per year. Coverage lasts one calendar year: September 1st – August 31st. You must have liability insurance for MU3606 Field Experience, Secondary Practicum and Student Teaching. ● Students are encouraged to take the MTLE Basic Skills exams before their junior year (while your knowledge of Math is fresh). v Students who have taken the ACT + Writing and have eared a composite score of 22 or higher, with a combined English/Writing score of 21 or higher are exempt from the Basic Skills portion of the MTLE.
Terminology:
Block – term for semester classes that are consistent for all teacher candidates (cohort system). Most education students have a three-‐‑block/semester system of upper division education courses. Music students have a two block system that combines blocks one and two in block two. All have student teaching in the block three (or last semester).
All courses should be completed prior to the semester of student teaching. Student teachers are not to be enrolled in any ensembles or classes during student teaching.
STEP: Stands for Secondary Teacher Education Program. Application to the Education Department is also referred to as application to STEP. Because the music education degree is administered through both music and education, students must apply to be admitted as teacher candidates.
