ABOUT THE HEROES & VILLAINS THEME Heroes and villains provide the backbone of some of our most enduring stories. These films prove that heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, from any background and any age. Working alone, or as part of a team these characters inspire us with their feats, even when they are relatively humble. But who doesn’t love a great baddie as well? Despite all of the booing and hissing, the truly great villains are more complex than they initially seem, and it is only when our hero encounters their nemesis that their greatest qualities are truly revealed.

HEROES & VILLAINS
FAMILY ACTIVITY
WHAT TO DO 1. Talk together about the characters in the film that you have watched. What skills and abilities did each character have? How did they use their talents during the course of the film? What were they fighting for? What were their weaknesses?
2. They should think about what their own personal skill or ability is and how they would use it if they were a superhero. For example, if your child is good at drawing, they might create murals to help people to escape to other worlds.
3. Using the Start your own superhero squad activity sheet, your child can draw him/herself in costume and to add details about them as a superhero in the first box.
4. Once this has been completed, ask your child to think of superheroes from their favourite films or to make up a new superhero that could join the squad. Check that your child is thinking carefully about each person’s role in the group by referring back to the film that you have just watched (eg the leader, the joker, the serious one etc).
TAKE IT FURTHER 1. Download the 3Cs and 3Ss Literacy Tool from the Into Film website for further activities and questions to discuss with your children while watching films together at home (www.intofilm.org/resources/127).
2. Using another copy of the Start your own superhero squad activity sheet, your child could create a rival squad to their superhero squad. Encourage them to include characters whose skills will challenge those of the original squad.
3. Create a storyboard or comic book about the new superhero squad. It could explain how they developed their powers, their day-to-day alter egos and how they met and formed their squad.
4. If your child wanted to create numerous superhero squads, then you could give each category a score out of 100 (eg weakness 7.5 out of 10) before cutting out the cards. Your child can then challenge family and friends to play ‘Top Trumps’ with the cards.
