WELCOME OUR PROGRAM AND GOALS Campers enjoy a variety of outdoor experiences that provide children with a creative and innovative introduction to the thrill of summer camp. Summer camp allows campers to develop independence, resiliency and a sense of self-empowerment. Our staff provides campers with a mix of activities to promote physical activity, mental creativity and an environment to build life-long friendships. Our camp also includes programs designed to build character by instilling our values; Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities including arts and crafts, swim lessons, science and nature, sports, waterfront activities and boating. Instructional swim lessons are provided daily to all Mystic Beach campers, while recreational swim is provided for Specialty Camps. The YMCA Mystic Day Camp day runs from 9:00 am-4:00 pm, with an extended care option available. The YMCA Mystic Day Camp is licensed through the State of CT Department of Public Health. YMCA Mystic Day Camp is excited for your family to become part of our community. Parental and camper relationships are very important in raising well-rounded children. We welcome parents to be part of our program by giving us feedback on how to improve our camp and their child’s experience. We strive not only for our campers to try something new, meet new people and be outside, but so much more. Through these things, our campers have a stronger sense of selfconfidence and a broader understanding of their world.
OUR STAFF A team of seasonal summer staff as well as full-time YMCA directors lead the YMCA Mystic Day Camp programs. Our summer staff is selected for their strong character, maturity, enthusiasm and commitment to our Y values as well as their ability to be a positive influence in our camper’s lives. We provide extensive staff training, drills and preparation, which include child abuse prevention, criminal background checks, CPR/AED and First Aid certification, behavioral management, team building and social facilitation. Our staff aims to encourage group participation and cooperation, building selfconfidence and self-esteem and to give each camper an opportunity to develop interests in a variety of program areas. With our strong camper and staff return rate, we are excited to continue our traditions and offer new challenges.
“I wanted my kids to enjoy summer outdoors, making new friends, having fun and trying new things. They did all of this and so much more at the Y! They loved the beach and being able to swim in the sea!” ~ Camp Parent
OUR FACILITIES YMCA Mystic Day Camp is nestled along the shores of the Mystic River on over 20 acres. Our facilities include 120 feet of beachfront, two baseball fields, tennis courts, pavilion, beach volleyball, and the YMCA facility. The YMCA facility houses a gymnasium, swimming pool and many other areas in case of inclement weather. Camper Choice “I wanted my child to have a fun and interesting experience this summer in an environment that was safe, positive and where she would be encouraged to fully participate and try new things.” ~ Camp Parent
As campers get older they start to develop their interests and want to improve their skills. This new choice format is designed specifically for Sting Rays, Dolphins and Sharks for this reason. Each session, campers will get to choose an activity to go to every Tuesday and Thursday morning so they can spend extra time practicing their new interest.
MYSTIC SPECIALTY CAMPS Campers will spend most of their day exploring their specific area, but also get to participate in traditional camp activities of swimming and playing at the beach. These camps are designed to allow campers to really “get into” their interest and also still be a kid at camp!
COVE Adventures Campers can experience the waters of Williams Cove and the Mystic River through kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and snorkeling. This water adventure camp will allow Specialty Campers to work with highly skilled instructors and enjoy different water adventure sports to develop their love of the water. During Cove Adventures, campers will get to show off their kayaking skills on their day-long trip to Ramm Island to explore and enjoy a picnic lunch! Once approved by our waterfront staff campers are welcome to use their own gear.
Basketball Camp Want to improve your shooting, passing or defensive skills? Be part of our Basketball Camp and spend time conditioning and scrimmaging with some of the areas finest players. This camp is designed for young male and female athletes looking to run drills, build endurance and improve their game.
The Great Art-Doors For our artists and performers, come spend two weeks immersed in the arts! Campers will learn to paint, draw and be crafty and get to work on their performing and acting skills. At the end of the session, campers will showcase a short skit for their parents.
Marine Scientist Camp
Extended Care AM and/or PM Care The Extended Care program provides children an opportunity to continue their camp experience, exploring our activities and building friendships. Hours of operation are 7:00 – 9:00 am and 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Campers participate in organized activities while being supervised by our caring camp staff.
TRADING POST Campers can now have a piece of camp to take home. Camp shirts and other gear will be available for campers and their families to purchase and will help keep those fun summer memories alive until next summer.
Counselor in Training (CIT) Program Entering grades 9 & 10
The Counselor in Training program is designed to prepare 9th and 10th graders to be our future counselors. CIT’s will have the opportunity to learn the basics of being a group counselor and experience working in our program areas. Our ultimate goal is to instill a unique sense of independence in our growing teens. CITs will shadow our counselors and also develop leadership skills and sense of social responsibility while giving back to the community. We are seeking teenagers who enjoy working with youth, have a strong moral center and are looking for a personal growth opportunity. Candidates must apply, provide references, interview and be accepted into the CIT Program. Applications are available online or at the Y.
Sample Daily Specialty Camp Schedule
Mystic Day Camp is very lucky to have access to a beach and all the weird and wonderful wildlife that lives in the Mystic River. If getting wet and exploring the local wildlife sounds like fun, then come learn to be a Marine Scientist! Bring extra clothes and a sense of adventure!
(will vary slightly with each specialty camp)
