The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award You will have the chance to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which is the most respected personal development award in the world and is highly valued by employers and universities. Additional Learning Support Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team provide a range of services for learners with varying support needs and are committed to responding to specif ic learner requests wherever possible. They can make special arrangements for exams and have a range of specialist resources and equipment to help you with your studies. The team can offer one to one support and supervision for students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, physical disabilities, mental health difficulties or language support needs. If you are aged 16-18 your course will be FREE and you could be entitled to up to £1,200 per year to help with the cost of studying.* Learner support funds and bursaries You may be eligible for financial support from our learner support fund to help with: The costs of travelling to and from college and costs incurred whilst studying Equipment that you may need for your course Childcare costs Accommodation costs, for those who study a distance from home Financial hardship and emergencies Plus, you could get free lunches in our food outlets. It will help you to cover the cost of tuition fees, and you won’t need to pay a penny back until you are earning over £21,000 per year! VOCATIONAL COURSES FOR 14-16 YEAR OLDS 2014/15 From September 2014 students aged 14-16 will be able to enrol with us. They will embark upon a vocational pathway and will be taught by our tutors who have industry experience and training in their vocational area. Students will also benefit from partnerships with local employers. 14-16 courses will be specifically tailored for school age pupils, giving them the opportunity to progress onto other educational pathways upon completion of their course. The broad areas of study are:
Academic Studies Specialism A vocational specialism sees each student choose a two year focus subject. Studying over two years, students will gain in-depth of knowledge, skills and expertise.
Students will also follow an academic timetable of core GCSEs such as English and Maths to provide wider progression options and will also study sciences, IT and personal development subjects.
Enrichment Our 14-16 enrichment programme will include planned trips, visits, competitions and will help students develop skills in representing their peers.
What experience does Northumberland College have with educating pupils from age 14? Through the Increased Flexibility fund, we have taught vocational qualif ications to this age group for many years so we already have signif icant expertise. Pupils who directly enrol with us will follow the National Curriculum and they will study key GCSEs in the same way they would at school.

Free tuition There are no tuition fees for 14-16 year olds and eligible pupils will still receive free school meals, just as they would at school.
Safe Environment Our safeguarding policy ensures that all young people attending college operate in a safe and secure environment.
Student support Students will be supported throughout their studies to ensure they get the best possible outcome from their course and for their future career. A web-based register and monitoring system is in place to ensure that all aspects of student progress is monitored and our dedicated team of mentors are here to help students identify and overcome barriers to learning such as conf idence, self-esteem and motivation.

Competitive course fees Here at Northumberland College we offer competitive higher education tuition fees. In 2013/14* these were £5,000 per year for UK and EU residents starting a full-time Foundation Degree, HNC or HND course. Tuition fees for part-time Foundation Degree, HNC and HND courses starting in 2013* were £2,500 per year. Higher education loans You can take out a loan through the Student Loans Company to cover your HE course fees and: There are no up-front costs You will not start to make any repayments on ar. your loan until you earn over £21,000 a year. If your income falls below £21,000, your repayments will stop The repayment rate is 9% of your income, above the first £21,000, so the amount you repay could be as little as £30 per month er Any outstanding balance is written off after 30 years

ROUGH GUIDE TO QUALIFICATIONS If you’re confused about the hundreds of courses on offer at Northumberland College, use our rough guide to find the right qualification and level for you. National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) A work-related qualification that is assessed in the workplace and can be studied at a number of levels. NVQs are available from Level 1 up to Level 7. Vocationally Recognised Qualification (VRQ) VRQ courses are similar to NVQs, but are assessed and taught at college. VRQs are made up of practical and theory based assessments. Apprenticeships / Advanced / Higher Apprenticeships A qualification that combines on the job training and college study and means you can earn a wage while you’re learning. BTEC Level 2 Extended Diploma / Diploma A Level 2 qualif ication that’s perfect if you want to get practical experience and develop academic skills. BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma / Diploma / Extended Diploma A Level 3 qualification that’s perfect if you want to get practical experience and progress onto higher education at college or university. Higher National Certificate or Diploma (HNC / HND) HNCs and HNDs are higher education qualifications, which combine theory with practical experience and enable you to join the second or third year of a relevant degree.

BUSINESS AND ADMINISTRATION We offer a range of courses for people who want to develop skills for work in the business, administration, finance, retail and secretarial sectors. Our Business and Administration courses are ideal for people who want to develop a broad range of secretarial and office skills to widen their skills and knowledge.
