HOSTED BY MARIA GRAPINI MEP (S&D Romania) Rapporteur of the Opinion of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection for the Committee on Transport and Tourism on new challenges and concepts for the promotion of tourism in Europe (2014/2241(INI)

The European initiative Nearly Zero Energy Hotels - neZEH neZEH, co-funded by the European Commission within the frame of the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, aims at accelerating the rate of large scale renovations of hotels into nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) supporting thus the European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (2010/31/EU, EPBD recast), neZEH has been targeting mainly the SME hotels, which represent 90% of the European hospitality market and counts with 16 European pilot hotels (in Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Romania, Spain and Sweden) committed to large scale renovation plans to accomplish nZEB goals through the technical advice of neZEH partners. The project has proven the evidence of the fact that nZEB concept and ambition is still weak in most Europe Member States, as there is a lack of consensus and clear definition among countries. The challenge arises when thinking on the existing private non-residential sector willing to become nZEBs, where we still encounter few successful examples to replicate.

MEP Grapini and neZEH partners drive the attention to the regional, national and European policy makers to commit to a zero energy growth in the tourism sector, reducing legislative barriers and introducing supporting measures.
