Dear Principals, The emotional and physical safety of our students is our top priority. It has come to our attention that there is a series on Netflix called 13 Reasons Why. It is based on a young adult novel that explores suicide, bullying, sexual assault, substance abuse, depression and anxiety in teens. This show is currently on many social media sites. It is important to be prepared for conversations that may occur among our students regarding this show, around depression, mental health and suicide. We want students to know that we have resources available to support them. We encourage students to reach out to adults and use the community resources available to them should they need someone to speak to about sexual abuse, drug use, depression, or if they are considering suicide. Some helpful resources offered are below: Jed Foundation National Association of School Psychologists Love is Respect In addition to the guidelines, procedures and resources in Chancellor’s Regulation A-755 on Suicide Awareness and Prevention, there is a Counseling Supports web page on the DOE website (http://intranet.nycboe.net/SchoolSupport/Counseling/default.htm) dedicated to providing resources for student supports. Included on this webpage is the NYC Guide to Suicide Prevention, Services and Resources (NYC Guide to Suicide Prevention, Services and Resources). Please also be aware that we provide annual Suicide Awareness training to all NYC DOE Schools Citywide. The schedule of training is posted on that site and is conducted by the Samaritans of NY who also run the Suicide Prevention Hotline here in the city. For additional guidance please contact your field support center counseling manager or the Office of Counseling Support Programs. In addition, please work with your counseling support personnel and your crisis intervention team and refer to the resources in your school’s Consolidated School and Youth Development plan in developing and providing supports for your students.
