New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness Scholarship Fund 2012 Application Dates and Deadlines Applications may be submitted starting March 12, 2012 Application Deadline: May 31, 2012 (stamped date) Notification of Award(s): July 15, 2012 Announcement of Award(s): October, 2012 Incomplete applications or applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

How to apply Applicants must submit: 1. Completed application form (application forms are available online at http://www.fitnh.org/NHCEH-Scholarship. 2. A personal essay. (500-1,000 words, double spaced) 3. An official school transcript, include class ranking if available. 4. A letter from a local homeless education liaison, school official, outreach worker, or shelter provider, religious leader, or other homeless service provider, confirming current or former homeless status. 5. A minimum of one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or other adult (not related) that can speak to the applicant's qualifications and experiences.

Eligibility To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria: 1. Applicant must be under the age of 21 prior to the scholarship due date; 2. Applicant must be currently residing in New Hampshire at the time of applying for the scholarship; 3. Applicant must be actively pursuing post-secondary education; 4. Applicant must be homeless or have been homeless at any time during their school attendance. Parameters on homeless status are defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act (see below). According to the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, a person is considered homeless who “lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence.” This includes people living in shelters, cars, motels/hotels, campgrounds, or places not meant for human habitation. The definition includes children and youth who are living with friends or relatives temporarily (doubled-up or sharing the housing of others) because they lack permanent housing.

NOTE: If selected for a scholarship award, you will be required to provide proof of post secondary school or program enrollment prior to release of scholarship funds.

Evaluation Criteria

Candidate’s applications will be evaluated on: 1. Demonstrated commitment to education during the experience of homelessness. 2. Academic achievement and accomplishments. 3. Potential impact of the scholarship for the student's educational career and how the scholarship money would be used. 4. Statement of the student's goals and career interests. 5. Grammar and use of language. Applicants should write essays with the above criteria in mind. Awardees will be invited to attend the New Hampshire Homeless Provider/Educator Conference to receive their award in October, 2012 in Concord NH. Exact date and time is TBA.
