USDA 13 DECEMBER WASDE (World Agriculture Supply & Demand) REPORT NEUTRAL CORN & SOYBEAN FUTURES, BUT BEARISH WHEAT! On December 10th, 2013 USDA released the 2013 December crop production report and pre-report estimates were looking for minor changes in demand with no changes in supply but lower ending stocks (carryout) for corn, soybeans and wheat. Please see chart below for a quick highlight and summary.

There were no big surprises is this latest USDA crop report, but corn ending stocks did come in lower than expectations, while soybean ending stocks came within expectations and wheat carryout was more than expected causing wheat prices to drop to new contract lows. CORN USDA forecast 13/14 corn ending stocks down 79 million bushels vs. expectations of 1.871 and down 95 million bushels vs. last month. The USDA increased export, food, and ethanol demand figures cancelling out a slight increase in the import numbers. Exports were revised higher by 50 million bushels while ethanol usage also was revised higher by 50 million to 4.95 billion bushels. The USDA pegged world ending stocks for 2013/14 at 162.46 million tonnes as compared to 164.33 million in November and trade expectations at 163.3 mil-

lion tonnes. The average farm price is now seen at $4.05 to $4.75 per bushel. The report, while supportive at face value, was neutral compared to the trade’s expectations, which triggered profit-taking. Both domestic and world carryout numbers are decidedly long-term bearish. There were no adjustments to US production numbers, which are expected to be delivered in January and most agree that the USDA will deliver even larger final 13/14 supply numbers. The global carryout

number of 162.5 million metric tons or 6.4 billion bushels is the highest level in almost a decade. The December USDA report, while positive relative to prior projections, does not alone present any game-changing event that will break corn out of the grips of its bear market, particularly with a 78.8 mmt Brazilian corn crop in the making. However, with the managed money crowd still short as many as 118,814 contracts one needs to wonder if there is a Santa Clause, year-end or “short covering” rally in the making. Watch for a close above $4.38/ bushel for the 2014 March corn futures contract for a potential move to $4.50 $4.60/bushel. It appears that China’s agricultural stockpiling policy may be poised to change according to Deutsche Bank. China is thinking of switching from price setting to alternative agriculture

support mechanisms such as insurance incentives or direct payments to farmers. This would definitely add to the bearish case for lower prices in 2014 as the need to import is discouraged and becomes less important or there is less of an incentive. It would be a gradual move but nonetheless a long-term bearish case for grain prices.

SOYBEANS USDA forecast 13/14 soybean ending stocks at 150 million bushels, compared to 170 million a month ago and in line with pre-report estimates at 154 million bushels thanks to larger projected crush and export demand offsetting a modest increase for exports. The average farm price is estimated at $11.50 to $13.50 per bushel. Brazil production was unchanged and Argentina production was revised up by 1 MMT to 54.5 which was less than expected. This report was considered neutral and not enough to take soybean futures near-term above resistance at $13.50/bushel, as most of the news was already priced into futures after rising $1.03/bushel or 8.3% since the beginning of October on continued strong Chinese export demand now sitting at 95% of the USDA December. export estimate with only 5 months into the marketing year. The speculators remain very long at 151,078 contracts, so any slowdown in Chinese demand or cancellations could cause profit taking to set it. A combined record South

American soybean crop at 142.5 - 150 mmt is long-term bearish! WHEAT USDA forecast 13/14 US all wheat carryout at 575 million bushels which is up from 565 million bushels in November, but much higher than the pre-report average trade estimate of 540 million bushels which was bearish and a surprise. Traders expected a jump in exports but exports were left unchanged and imports were revised higher by 10 million bushels in spring wheat to 202 million bushels due to the record Canadian wheat crop at 37.56 mmt. Global ending stocks for 2013/14 came in at 182.78 million tonnes vs. last month at 178.48 million tonnes and above trade expectations of near 179.1 million tonnes. Global wheat numbers were left unchanged outside of Australia and Canada. Aussie wheat was ratcheted up 1.0 MMT to 26.5 mmt while Canada got a 4.3 mmt bump after last week’s Stats Canada final December production number report. This latest bearish USDA monthly crop report was enough to send wheat futures to new contract lows. Demand will need to pick up if there are any hopes of a Christmas or “short covering” rally with the funds record short 64,013 contracts as of December 3, 2013.
