The Guest-of-Honour was Dr Thirumalachari. Ramasami, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science & Technology. The Guest Speaker was Professor Gautam R Desiraju, Structural Chemist, Indian Institute of Science, who has played a major role in the development and growth of the subject of crystal engineering. Professor Gautam was also a Thomson Reuters Award recipient in 2006, His topic for the evening was citations in research evaluation. The award ceremony was attended by more than 150 of the awardees’ industry peers from leading research institutions and libraries, companies and members of the government and policy institutions in India. Commenting on the Awards, Mr. Vinay Singh, director of India, IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters, said, “India continues to be an important contributor to the global research community as borne by the consistently influential body of research undertaken by these 10 award recipients. We are very pleased to host this event again to honour Indian researchers who are highly esteemed by not just their peers in India, but also around the world. We have always strongly supported the R&D efforts of India’s research and business community, and will continue to work closely with India’s institutions and companies to help them identify world-class research excellence.” Said Dr. Wong Woei Fuh, Asia managing director, IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters, “India has a long tradition of science. We are honoured to support India’s pursuit of scientific discovery and are excited about its dynamic research landscape. As the trusted partner of the Asia Pacific R&D community for 20 years, our fact-based methodology and information have helped researchers in India and across the region, to not only identify the fields where they are taking the global lead and making a significant contribution, but also gain insights to inform their research strategy and management. By helping research communities to accelerate their discovery and innovation with our information, be it scientific literature or citation indexing data, we are fostering closer collaboration so that their efforts can ultimately benefit society.” Research Methodology: India Citation Awards 2012 Primaryfocus: India-based researchers who had written multiple “Highly Cited Papers” over the past decade, 2002-2011. Data for this analysis were extracted from Highly Cited Papers as identified in Essential Science IndicatorsSM from Thomson Reuters. Highly Cited Papers are defined as the top 1% of research papers worldwide in each of 22 disciplines based on total citations as determined by field and publication year. A threshold of at least five Highly Cited Papers was set as the minimum requirement for selection in order to identify only individuals who demonstrated repeated high impact (citation impact) contributions in their respective fields. Indian scientists who had previously been recognised at Thomson Reuters events in 2004, 2006 and 2009 were not considered for selection. After the selections were made, each name was confirmed in the most recent version of Essential Science IndicatorsSM (which includes citation counts through 30 April 2012). This ensured that each awardee still claimed authorship of five or more Highly Cited Papers published since 2002 (articles and conference proceedings papers only). The Essential Science IndicatorsSM is derived from the Thomson Reuters Web of Science® multidisciplinary citation database which includes all articles and reviews.

According to Thomson Reuters Essential Science IndicatorsSM data, India is ranked among the top 20 nations (#16) worldwide by total citations attributed to its scientific papers published in Thomson Reutersindexed journals from January 2001 through 31 August 2011. This is presented by ScienceWatch.com, the bi-monthly newsletter by Thomson Reuters for the international research community. This event is part of a series of Asia Pacific Research Days hosted by Thomson Reuters to recognise research excellence in the region demonstrating how various communities are leading the world through scientific discoveries and innovation in their respective fields. Similar events have taken place previously in Australia (2012, 2008), China (2008), India (2009, 2006, 2004), Japan (2012, 2007, 2004), South Korea (2007) and Taiwan (2011, 2006).
