Library Book Sale Planned for May 17th and 18th Join us for the 2013 Sale! Donations of books, CD’s, videos, children’s books, LP’s, puzzles and games have been arriving since last summer. We’ve received so many donations, it was necessary to arrange off-site storage in advance of the sale. The quantity and quality of books we’ve received confirms that this year’s sale and selection will be just as exhaustive as our last. Prices in most categories remain unchanged – representing a great value for our loyal customers.
Our Annual Book Sale is an important community event. Proceeds are used to support literacy initiatives and programming at the library. It offers an opportunity to purchase unusual, out-of-print or well-loved titles not readily available otherwise, and benefits the environment by keeping books from the landfill. Collectors, dealers, and avid readers - everyone is certain to find something of interest at our sale. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Your support is critical to our success!

Letter from the Director….. Fundraising is an yearlong effort for the library. In order to maintain our current programs and services, the library must raise 25% of its annual operating budget. This is a considerable undertaking, and it is accomplished by board members, busy staff and dedicated volunteers. If you have not yet contributed to our Annual Fund, there is no time like the present. Your donation, in any amount, is an important factor in our continued success. The Towns of Bennington, Shaftsbury and Woodford contribute the remaining 75%. The next time you meet one of our hard working local officials on the street, or in line at a local business, I hope you will take time to communicate your appreciation for their ongoing support of this vital community resource. By providing adequate funding for the library these officials ensure its continued existence, and it is important for the community to express it’s appreciation. Significant support comes as well from the many volunteers who give so freely of their time and talent to the library. In this edition we recognize the many individuals who have contributed over the past year by delivering book boxes to local child care centers, processing books for the collection, assisting with programs, workshops, the book sale and much more. All contribute in a meaningful way to the library’s operation, and I thank you for your ongoing support. Finally, you (dear reader) are reading this newsletter because you recognize the important role the library plays in our community and are invested in its continued success. Please consider the value the library offers to you on a personal level, and show your appreciation in any way that you can. Through financial support, donations of services and supplies, as volunteers… whatever is within your means, I hope you will join us in working to make our library the very best it can be. Bennington Free Library Celebrates World Book Night “Spreading the love of reading, person to person” On Tuesday, April 23 starting at 2:30 p.m. for 10 minutes each hour Chris Poggi, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian and Karson Kiesinger, Reference and Adult Services Librarian will be giving away copies of two books as part of World Book Night. Chris and Karson will be outside the library (weather permitting) on Main Street sharing their love of reading. World Book Night U.S. is a celebration of books and reading held on April 23, when volunteers across America give away books within their communities to those who don’t regularly read. In 2012 over 80,000 World Book Night volunteers in four countries gave away more than 2.5 million books. Chris will be giving away copies of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and Karson will be giving away copies of Favorite American Poems in Large Print edited by Paul Negri. The Bennington Free Library joins The Bennington Bookshop in celebrating World Book Night. The goal of the World Book Night giveaway is to reach people who don’t regularly read and/or people who normally don’t have access to printed books.
