NOMADS News With their show, Olive! the NOMADS raised over €1,000 euros for charity. In the coming weeks, the drama group will hold their AGM when they will decide who the money should go to. Readers are invited to contact Jan with their suggestions on worthy causes (Jan Shrimpton, 627 293 273).

The show, which was held last month, was a huge success with over 90 people in the audiences. The group sends their thanks to Victoria’s Animal Refuge and Allen Graham Charity for Kids for their help with costumes and Legends Alcudia for their kind donation.

Misery of the Processionary Caterpillar Processionary caterpillars have blighted the region recently with dogs being the main victim. These bugs pose a real threat to the pine trees, the larvae eat the pine needles with such speed that the trees don’t always survive. But more alarmingly, they can provoke severe allergic reactions. The hairs on the caterpillar contain an irritating protein called thaumetopein. These hairs are easily airborne and when they come into contact with human skin, painful rashes and serious allergic reactions can occur. Pets easily pick up the hairs on their paws, which they then lick to ease the irritation. The hairs, in

contact with the mouth and nose, cause the lips, tongue and nose to swell up to an enormous size and it can end fatally for your pet. At the end of the summer, the adult moths mate and the females lay the eggs on the pine needles. Once hatched, the caterpillars feed off the needles and build a nest that looks like candy floss. When they are ready, in the warmer weather about this time of year - the caterpillars start their procession to the ground in search of food until eventually they bury themselves into the ground to pupate. As

moths they live for a very short period, during which they mate and lay their eggs in the pine tree. The advice is to be extra vigilant. One vet in Puerto Pollensa advises that you should avoid walking your dog anywhere where there are pine trees. If you do see the caterpillars, leave immediately. Keep in mind that these horrid bugs bury themselves under the ground and dogs often pounce on them without owners realising. If your dog does come into contact with a caterpillar, wash its mouth out immediately and get to your nearest continued on page 3

Local News Plans in Cala San Vicente Pollensa Townhall have released its plans for this year and included in the agenda is the adaptation of the beach bar Balaixa, in Cala Sant Vicente. The government team formed by Junts Avançam and Unió Mollera Pollencina (UMP) announced that “the time has come to make the necessary investment” to transform the old beach bar into a tourist information office. The project, still pending approval this month, has been allocated €50,000. Plans include renovating the surroundings of the green zone of Balaixa. Last November, the council expropriated the parcel of Balaixa, which was marked as a green area. The forced acquisition of the plot, of 176 sqm, was formalized for a price of €215,250 euros, an amount that saved €70,000 with respect to the valuation made by the council a few years ago. During the last legislature, the former PP government team proposed awarding the Balaixa beach bar to a private company for a period of 20 years who would then hand it over to the Council for good. The operation did not come to fruition because the company finally withdrew the proposal.

Escoleta de Gola Receives budget boost Another item in Pollensa Townhall’s budget is €250,000 for the nursery school ‘Escoleta de la Gola’ in Puerto Pollensa which will enable the facility to “give the necessary service” to the town.

The council emphasized that the school has seen a significant increase in demand, so this year’s accounts will increase by €160,000. The council pointed out that “the government team considers it very important to continue offering this public service and we want to rid any talk of closure that we’ve seen in recent years.”

Gelats Valls – Old Town Just one month after the Council of Pollensa executed the eviction order that weighed on the Gelats Valls kiosk in the Port because it didn’t have the necessary enabling deed, the Junts-UMP government team is looking into whether the Gelats Valls kiosk in the main square of the Old Town may or may not continue its activity with all the necessary guarantees. The mayor, Miquel Àngel March, explained in the last council plenary session following a question from the opposition party Tots per Pollença, that it is not an identical case to that of the port because the kiosk in the square is not located in public domain but on a site “apparently municipal not listed in the registry.” The council is now studying the situation to see if it is necessary to intervene and try to agree a solution for the future. The mayor explained that, according to municipal technicians, unlike the kiosk in the port, this is a “removable” structure that could be result in determining its regularization.

Wild Goat Destruction The number of yew trees found in the Serra de

2

Tramuntana has worryingly declined, according to a study by the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries, which indicates that 68% of the decrease is due to wild goats in the area. 456 trees were documented compared to 579 in 2007. 68% of the yews inventoried were damaged by wild goats that destroy the primary growing buds preventing the trees from growing normally. Fortunately, the Tejo Management Plan has given very positive results, trees that have been protected against the goats have recovered, and almost 500 specimens planted by the Ministry in protected places have developed satisfactorily. The yew, therefore, is not in danger, but the department has expressed its concern that the island’s natural populations suffer the effects of a non-native, invasive and insufficiently managed species, like the goat.

Anti-Corruption Investigation in Cala Molins The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, Juan Carrau, is investigating the 1999 purchase by the council of Pollensa of a green zone in Cala Molins at the cost of €180,000 (34 million pesetas) even though the transfer should have been free under a legalization agreement of the top floor of Hotel Molins. According to the Prosecution Office the operation could lead to a global fraud of €1.6 billion. The investigation is looking into the ex-councillor of Public Works, Jaume Carbonero, then the municipal architect and who signed on behalf of the mayor the urban agreement through which the council bought the plot.

The Townhall bought 1,500 sqm of land that, according to the planning, drafted by Carbonero himself, was to be a free transfer. The Party Popular of Pollensa publicly denounced the purchase operation in July 2002, yet the case has never before been the subject of a judicial investigation.

Tots Slam Local Government Once Again Tots per Pollença has denounced the government team in Pollensa claiming that the council has stopped works worth €3,430,000 thereby not completing the planned investments for the 2016 budget year. They blame this on a lack of foresight and planning. Included in last year’s budget was the second phase of the frontline in Puerto Pollensa with a budget of €2.1m, the third phase of Gotmar’s urbanization with a budget of €1.05m, which has just begun, and the rehabilitation of the Centro Cultural Guillem Cifre de Colonya with a budget of €200,000 that has yet to be spent.

Fishmarket Plans in Pollensa The Council of Pollensa has announced that it will reform the old fishmonger without knocking it down and has discarded the proposed project that would involve the demolition of this old building, one that holds sentimental value to many Pollencins. The budget of 2017 has placed €100,000 to start the work, municipal technical services have already begun drafting the reform project with continued on page 3

¡Hola! That familiar buzz is in the air, properties are getting spruced up, renovations rushed through for the Easter break and market stalls are coming back for the 2017 season. Spring is a great time here in the north of Mallorca. It’s an exciting time at TOTN too as the team is growing. I’m thrilled to welcome Susie Robinson who is working on the crucial role of media sales, which essentially keeps the paper running. So, exciting times are ahead! We’re also back to fortnightly issues so we’ll see you again on March 23rd. Hasta luego! Joanna

Misery of the Processionary Caterpillar cont... vet as soon as possible. One TOTN reader’s dog was sick within 30 seconds of digging up caterpillars, and within 5 minutes she couldn’t walk. Do not stamp on them, the hairs scatter in the breeze and can cause an immediate reaction. For homeowners with palm trees in the garden, prevention is key and this can be done with trunk injection during the autumn months

so that the tree has a defence system in place as the caterpillars begin their feast. When the nests are visible, seek professional help. They should be destroyed safely and efficiently. If you have pine trees that you are concerned about, one company who offers trunk

ESRA North News from Howard Mullen Last month, ESRA North celebrated another successful year with their AGM at the Vecinos Rooms in Puerto Pollensa. Chris Maynard, reported on a successful year with increased membership and many outstanding events. Over the year, €4,000 was presented to this year’s chosen charities, Prodis and AFAMA. A new committee was appointed and Chris Maynard returned to the Chair ready to outline brief plans for 2017, including continued work with local charities, particularly with providing home-made equipment for AFAMA. Plans are already in hand to recruit new members and to recruit potential Committee members for next year, and to provide an even more full and varied social calendar.

Thanking her outgoing Committee, Chris singled out Brenda Lowndes, Membership Secretary, who had not been well over the year and presented her with flowers on behalf of the members ESRA North Committee 2017 Chairman: Christine Maynard Social Secretary: Brian Lowndes Membership Secretary: Debbie Potgieter Secretary: Sharon Cooper Member Support: Howard Mullen Treasurer: Jill Patch Newsletter editor: Robert Maynard Voting Members: Alan Forsythe Margaret Scott Margaret Inscoe

the initial budget pending approval this month. In the announcement, the local government, emphasized that the new project “definitively discards” the demolition of the fishmonger building and “intends to rehabilitate the space” and adapt it to the same functions that were planned in the previous project. Once reformed, the building will be a tourist information office, a municipal warehouse and a small dressing room for the performances that take place in the square. Public restrooms will also be installed. In 2014, a public contest of ideas was held and nine

architectural proposals were presented to the public, at the opening of the Can Llobera library during the Fira. The winning design proposed the demolition of the building but a civic platform led by the current mayor, Miquel Àngel March, stood against the demolition and called for more sensitivity to the architectural and sentimental heritage of the building.

Monti Sion Ownership The rector of Pollensa, Xisco Vicens Gomila, has discovered, while searching through parish archives, that the church of Monti Sion is not an ecclesiastical property

as most thought. It is actually listed as municipal property. He has asked the Bishop of Mallorca to rectify the immatriculation. In his statement, Xisco Vicens said that, “The temples were immatriculated in a general process that was done from Palma without knowing the particularities of Pollensa… we immediately advised the Bishop’s office and they are already talking with the registry to see which administrative channel we need to rectify the situation.” Xisco Vicens will negotiate with Mayor the signing of an agreement that allows the parish to register their name on the property as that they are ones using it.

The Energy Certificate

1. Budget. Budget Budget. It’s something you will have heard time and time again, but seriously, set a budget and add 20% for a contingency fund (and expect to spend it!). 2. Before you begin, look at the plumbing, electrics, and data cables. Plan for increased water pressure for your power shower, increased sockets for your TV, cable, Internet requirements. Always add more than you think you’ll need.

The origins of these regulations come from a European Directive that were complied with by all member states.

3. Look at the timings. Think about heavy work and when that will take place. Regulations mean you can’t do noisy work in the centre of town during the high season. 4. Always get at least three estimates and make sure the estimates become quotes before the work starts.

6. Communicate well with your builder. Make him your friend; make him a cup of tea. 7. Remember that not everything is under your control, with building work comes lots of hiccups and plans will change, things will get held up. Make sure you have some contingency planning in your timetable.

The responsibility for obtaining this energy certificate is falls on the part of the owner and s/ he must hire the service of a certifying technician to obtain it. The energy certificate or certificado energético is essential documentation that you need in order to sell or rent your property. Mandatory in Spain since June 1, 2013, the certificate reports on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

8. Beware; if you change your mind, your expenses will have to as well. Plan ahead and work out the style you want to go for. Make your mind up and stick to it! 9. Think about taking on the simple jobs yourself; knocking out walls, even tiling can be quite easy for those inclined. Consider what you might be able to do and do it.

7

N O R T H

Top Tips: Renovation

5. Don’t be afraid of looking online for materials, anything from kitchen taps to tiles, appliances to bathroom furniture. You could pick up a serious bargain.

The effect of domicile vs. residence on your estate planning

O F

The content of the energy certificate is summarized in the energy label. This label, similar in appearance to the energy label present in household appliances, indicates the emission and consumption ratings that the building has obtained in its energy certificate, in a colour scale that goes from A, the most efficient, to G, the least efficient. When

it is being assessed, technicians will focus on insulation, ventilation, heating and lighting. Properties with efficiency class A can consume up to 85% less energy than the low efficiency class G. The idea is that buyers are able to easily determine the energy costs of the home they are about to buy. In turn, it encourages property owners to make changes to make the property more efficient, therefore adding value and saleability of the property. There are plenty of companies offering the service in Mallorca and costs range from €200 to €400. Owners should have the energy certificate while their property is on the market, not just when the property is sold.

Puerto Pollensa - Stunning country home close to the beach

10. Renovating an old property can kick up lots of rubble, and not moving it on can stop the work. Skips will need to be organized and they’re not free. Don’t underestimate rubbish disposal.

Spanish Conversation: Talking with Mood Previous lessons from Valeria form the general groundwork and help to form full sentences. Now we look at how you can use these skills in different scenarios. This week we look at how you can use Spanish clauses to talk about the ‘mood’ behind the verb...

Tweet of the Week

The Sport of the North

Talking about Mood If you doubt something, if you wish for something, if you are making an impersonal statement (eg. It’s likely that…, it’s good that…), if you are feeling vague, want to say “even if…” then you need to use something called the Subjunctive. It’s not a tense. It’s a mood.

Alcudia is to host, for the second time, the Para-Badminton International this weekend, 7th-12th March. The tournament will bring together 350 athletes from 26 countries and will have the help of 100 volunteers. This tourist-sports event is organized by the tourism department of Alcudia, within the framework of the “Alcudia for all” project that works to “adapt, improve and promote the town of Alcudia so it can be safely visited by people with various disabilities”.

Basic Principles There are two parts to a subjunctive sentence: the main clause and the subordinate clause. These two clauses generally are separated by QUE, which translates into THAT. The main clause contains the statement of desire, uncertainty or opinion: this is the indicative. The subordinate clause contains that which is being considered: this is in the subjunctive.

Mitja Maraton

I doubt that he works much. Yo dudo que él trabaja mucho.

The main clause is “I doubt”, the subordinate is “he works much”, which is in the subjunctive. Changing the Verb to Subjunctive

Appearing on the Pollença Twitter page, this picture is from Remove_before_flight. Follow them on Instagram for more superb pictures of the Bay. Also the perfect opportunity to mention the Splash-In 2017, 28-29th April!

Nearly all verbs in the present subjunctive are formed the same way. Take the yo form of a present tense verb, eg, hablo, remove the ‘o’ ending and add the corresponding endings as you can see in the following examples:

Defender Raillo gave the islanders an early lead and a nonexistent penalty saw the home side sneak a point. Mallorca must learn to hold on to leads in games like this if they are to avoid the ignominy of relegation to the lower tiers of Spanish football.

Para-Badminton is growing in popularity and its first ever inclusion in the Paralympics in the 2020 Tokyo Games has certainly contributed to this. As in badminton, parabadminton athletes compete in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Sport Classes ensure fairness in competition. In para-badminton these sport classes range from wheelchair with impairment in both legs and trunk or in one or both lower limbs, from standing with varying impairment in lower limbs or balance, impairment in upper limbs, and short stature. With the Paralympic Games just three years away, the level of competition will be high. Head along to the pavelló Municipal along the Avinguda Cornel·li Àtic to watch. Every day from 9. The finals will be held on Sunday 12th from 9am-12pm.

The Mallorquinista One Step Up...

Real Mallorca’s topsy-turvy season continues on its wayward path. Whenever they take one step forward it is immediately followed by two steps back. The three reinforcements that were recruited in the winter transfer window Angelino, Saul Garcia and Serbian Sasa had given the squad a much-needed injection of both talent and steel. Sasa has dominated the midfield since his arrival and must be wondering what he needs to do to generate consistency among his colleagues. Angelino is an attacking full back or winger who is on loan from Manchester City and has injected pace down the left flank. Head Coach Javier Olaizola is making stirring inspirational speeches in every press conference but his words seem to fall on deaf ears sometimes. The home game against Tenerife was one of the most astonishing examples of a game of two halves. Mallorca opened the scoring after 5 minutes through Juan Dominguez and for the first 45 minutes played some of their best football of the season and could have been two or three ahead by half

time. Tenerife’s head coach Pep Luis Marti introduced two substitutes at the restart and the game turned on its head. The Islanders’ central defender Raillo unluckily turned a cross into his own net and the home team seemed to lose all confidence and conceded two more goals in rapid succession. A late penalty gave the Canary Island visitors an emphatic away victory. Pep Luis Marti is a former playing legend at Real Mallorca and ended his career two years ago at the age of forty. He was snapped up by Tenerife and he has reinvigorated the team there. Many Mallorca fans would love to see him back in charge in the future although there is precious little to encourage him to do so at the present time. Mallorca are well and truly in a relegation battle and sit third bottom of the Spanish second division. The next game is at home against Lugo this Saturday 11th April with a 4pm kick off. They simply must win this one. The following Saturday they are away to Huesca.

The Oris Rally Clásico Swiss watchmaker Oris, the title sponsors of the Oris Rally Classic, presented the prestigious classic motor race last week. Starting on 9th and ending on the 11th in the north of the island, this is the 13th edition of the what has been coined “The Pearl of Rallys”. There are almost 100 vehicles registered with many new drivers many who have come back. Organizers say that interest in the rally is so high they already have drivers looking to sign up for next year’s event. Some of the most exclusive cars in the world, will be attending including the Lancia Delta S4, Jaguar XK 120, Ford RS 2002, a 1973 BMW 2002 and a 1974 Stratoss HF and participants come from all over, including Spain, France, England, Germany, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland. The rally covers more than 500km, with a total of 14 timed events, spread over three days and held on closed roads. The first edition took place in 2005, where 45 cars raced. Some of the cars seen have been the Porsche 910, Ferrari Dayton,

Bentley LeMans, Mercedes Gullwings, among others. In this sense, this year the Classic Oris Rally will have the presence of that automobile jewel that is the AC Cobra of the year 1966, which highlights the technical quality of the event. Oris, the exclusive Swiss watchmakers, has created the exclusive Calobra watch in honour of the famous road and they will present the winners with the Oris Calobra Day Date Limited Edition II, an exclusive high-performance model. The Rally will be based in Puerto Portals, and family activities will be held from Thursday 9 until Saturday afternoon. In Plaza Capricho a large Scalextric track, offers all motor lovers a chance to compete. There will also be an exhibition of electric motorcycles, of old Vespas and Lambrettas and Porsche will exhibit a limited edition of its Porsche Cayenne. Racing in the North will take place between Lluc, the Coves de Campanet and Cap de Formentor, the rally will start at 8.15am and finish at 7.30pm. Expect local road closures.
