Nov 1, 2012 ... "Corvette Summer" are now just memories waiting to be renewed in the spring. For most of you, it's time to prepare your special car for a long.
FROM THE PRESIDENT . . . As I write to you, it is a dreary, damp late fall day. It is a grim reminder of what comes next and that the sun and fun of a "Corvette Summer" are now just memories waiting to be renewed in the spring. For most of you, it's time to prepare your special car for a long nice nap. For me it is certainly a bittersweet time when I finish getting my car ready for winter storage. Somehow trading in a Corvette for a snow blower just doesn't seem fair! But boy, do we have some great memories! Like Camp Courageous, Cruisin' the Ave car show, NCCC Convention, Vinton Cruise, Vettes on the River, Honor Flights, Gunder Cruise, Homecoming parades, Picnics, Vacations, Dinner cruises, Leaf Run, Halloween party etc. etc. etc. I hope that you enjoyed the very full and fun summer as much as I did! Thank you to all the members that were in charge of these events! Our October regular meeting was certainly a very special one! First of all there was free food (always a big hit with the members) provided by Pat McGrath Chevrolet, (thank you John Baker for always being the gracious host). Then our club handed out the proceeds of our annual car show to our four charities in the amount of $3,000.00 each! WOW…The proceeds come from yet another highly successful Cruisin' the Ave event and are much appreciated by the various organizations. During the presentations we found out that two of our charities’ representatives had actually been on the October Honor Flight just two days before our meeting. To hear their first hand experiences and the appreciation for our club’s support certainly made me very proud to be a member of C.R.C.C.!

the membership. Feel free to contact them with your ideas or suggestions. It's not hard to believe, when you read the early history of our club, that the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club would evolve into what it is today. It started with a small group of Corvette lovers that wanted to have fun and do some community service and it has evolved into a large group of Corvette lovers that want to have fun and do some community service! 50 Years And Still Having Fun…I can't wait for it to start! Don't forget, our November meeting will feature nomination of officers for the 2013 year so plan on attending. Terry Primrose has our Christmas Party scheduled for December 8th at Indian Creek Country Club in Marion and could sure use some help, give her a call please. Don't forget to email all of your fun Corvette pictures to Dianna Knutson at [email protected] for her famous wall display at the Christmas Party.

Charity Car Show Check Presentation “What you do for yourself in life, dies with you. What you do for others, becomes immortal.” I wish those were my words, but they’re not. But I try to live my life that way, however, and have witnessed many of you club members doing the same. Wayne, Danny and I have worked hard on the car show for many years, and we’ve taken a lot of pride in being able to present some sizeable checks to our charities. And I hope that all you members that have participated in the car show, possibly even longer than we have, felt some pride welling up inside you at the presentation on October 18th. I know we co-chairs thank you and appreciate your tremendous efforts in helping to make this show such a success each year. It’s a real team effort! For those of you who couldn’t make the presentation, we donated $12,000 – $3,000 to each of our four charities. The charity representatives included: Roger Norton, from the East Central Chapter of the Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa; Steve Elliott from Clothe-A-Child; Andrea Brommelkamp from Make-A-Wish, and Jackie Wallace from Miracles In Motion. It was great to have them in attendance, and get to know them as members of the CRCC family. As you probably have heard by now, we co-chairs feel that it is time to step down and turn the reins over to some new people to plan for the 2014 car show. We will begin working on the upcoming 2013 show very soon. If you have searched your soul and feel like this is something that you’d like to become involved in, I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. You will work

with tremendously caring CRCC members, and meet new friends in the process of rounding up sponsors – most of which are repeaters and much of the show organization is already in place. Jumping on board now, will give you time to experience what it takes to pull together the various components of this car show. The key is to surround yourself with good people, and there are many with years of experience. So immortalize your efforts now, and contact us at [email protected] or 319.360.1939. Thank you! Dick Butschi CRCC presents $3,000 to each of these charities: Front row from left: Andrea Brommelkamp from Make-A-Wish; Jackie Wallace from Miracles In Motion; Steve Elliott from Clothe-A-Child; and Roger Norton from the East Central Chapter of the Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa. This New Year's Eve party will be a CASINO NIGHT THEME. Keep the date open and watch for more to come.

Thank you! To all of you who sent cards and hospital e-mails with hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery after a pretty scary week – thank you so much! I also greatly appreciated those of you who comforted and greeted me with hugs on the Leaf Run and at last month’s meeting. I love the hugs – especially yours, Larry Armbrecht! The wet kiss wasn’t necessary, however. I also received some flowers – the largest one being a beautiful bouquet of mums, which I figured was from the club, but came to find out that the card was signed by waitresses, bartenders and managers from Buffalo Wild Wings! Never saw that one coming! Guess they want me healthy to keep up the stock evaluations. I may be cutting back on the French fries and eating more salads, there, however. And my heart doctor tells me that even on Coumadin, for a short time, that 2, or 3 beers is okay – just don’t get carried away. I assured him that I know my limits, but I just get drunk before I reach them! And as for the flowers from the club, Secretary Madeline Watertor informed me that I need to take the “big dirt-nap” to get those, or words to that effect. I take great consolation in that fact, Madeline. All kidding aside, I appreciate your concern more than I can express. You are truly family! Dick Butschi

Behind the Wheel with the Competition Director Thank you to everyone who helped with our practice autocrosses and our sanctioned events. There are too many to thank that I might forget someone and I don’t want that to happen. The racing season is over and the trailer is now in need of some repair: Door hinges have pulled out Doors have gotten water inside and the wood is starting to separate

THANK YOU, LEE JONES!

Cedar Rapids Corvette Club morning coffee group at Mr. Beans Lee Jones (seated with hat) receiving an Eastern Iowa Honor Flight recognition plaque for his very generous donations to the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club Honor Flight Fund. Lee's donations paid for all the plaques for two complete Eastern Iowa Honor Flights.

Hooks on the back of the doors have bent and broken. They hold the door in place when open Trailer is 8 years old and has sat out in the weather for all of those years. Wheel bearings will be replaced to make sure there is no problem there Total estimated at Wright Way Trailer was $2800 which is about 50% of what the trailer cost when new A motion will come up next meeting to allow funds to start repairs. We are not going to spend $2800! We have had two club members volunteer to do this work for us which will save us much money. Thank you to Dennis Primrose and Roger Thompson. Again, thank you to all who supported our activities this year. I am looking forward to next year already. Come, join and enjoy,

Catherine McAuley Center Editor’s Note . . . Over the years you have heard me say how much the Catherine McAuley Center truly appreciates receiving the toiletries that you graciously donate over each year. I decided to give you a little more information about the Center. Kathy Our mission: “The Catherine McAuley Center (CMC), founded by the Sisters of Mercy, promotes the wellbeing and dignity of individuals in need by providing basic education for adults and a transitional housing program for women.” The Sisters of Mercy and friends opened the Cedar Rapids Catherine McAuley Center in July of 1989. The Center moved to its current location at 866 Fourth Avenue SE in March of 1993. The Center’s programs continue to fill two vital needs in the community: adult basic education and transitional housing program which serves a critical population of homeless women. When women enter the program, their most immediate needs are shelter, food and/or clothing. Funding is provided by United Way funds, fundraisers and donations.

HALLOWEEN PARTY & HAYRACK RIDE Someone’s having a great time!

CMC offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities including tutoring adult students. Training is provided when necessary. The staff would be happy to talk to you as to what their volunteer needs are at the Center. Source: CMC brochure; www.cmc.cr.org
