HOW MEAL PLANS WORK Meal plan members swipe their NYUCards at each meal, registering meal plan and Dining Dollar account activity. Meal plans consist of two parts: a meal allowance and Dining Dollars. MEAL ALLOWANCE The meal allowance is the specified number of meals that can be eaten each week or semester. One meal is deducted from a member’s account each time the card is swiped. Unused meals in “per week” plans do not carry over from week to week; unused meals in “Flex” plans do not carry over from semester to semester. The meal allowance can be used at any of the traditional dining locations—Weinstein Dining, Third North Courtyard Café, Rubin Dining Room, Hayden Dining Room, and the Kosher Eatery. DINING DOLLARS Dining Dollars work the same way debit cards work: the amount of a purchase is deducted from the Dining Dollar balance in a member’s account. Dining Dollars are accepted at all NYU campus dining halls and can also be used to make purchases at Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, and Argo Tea. Dining Dollars cannot be used for the purchase of gift cards.
Members may purchase $15, $20, $50, or $100 blocks of Dining Dollars by logging on to https://housing.nyu.edu/MealPlans any time after the meal plan cancellation/ change deadline. Added Dining Dollars charges are posted on students’ bursar accounts. Unused Dining Dollars automatically roll over from the fall to spring semester as long as students remain active meal plan members. The 10, 14 and 19 Plus plans allow students to pre-purchase additional dining dollars prior to the beginning of a semester. Are you worried you may not have enough dining dollars for your favorite Starbucks drink or for last minute needed items from our convenience stores? Plus plans provide an additional $75. The extra $25 dining dollars are our way of saying thank you. You can use your dining dollars at any location on campus. MEAL EXCHANGES Meal exchange allows members to create a meal, an entrée, side, and beverage from a predetermined selection of menu items from among a la carte options at retail dining locations. Meal Exchanges can be made at Weinstein Food Court, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Common’s Café, the MarketPlace at the Kimmel Center, Palladium, and Dunkin’ Donuts. NYU DINING!3
HEALTH & NUTRITION
NYU Dining Services makes every effort to accommodate students’ special dietary requirements and provide a selection of dining options. Dining room managers will work with members to prepare meals according to their personal needs. Students with special dietary requirements or food allergies can contact Ann Marie Powell, Director of Dining Services at
[email protected] or at (212) 998-4279. If you are seeking nutritional information on healthy eating, weight maintenance and vegetarianism contact the Health Promotion Office at (212) 443-1234. VEGETARIAN CHOICES People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), has rated NYU one of the friendliest vegetarian campuses for our vegan and vegetarian programs. Our specially trained chefs create delicious entrées using fresh vegetables, legumes, and grains serving a wide variety of vegetarian dishes everyday, at every meal, in every dining location.
4!www.nyudining.com
GLUTEN FREE ZONES Find Gluten Free Zones in all residential dining locations. We have made a commitment to ensure there are plenty of gluten free options available and have dedicated toasters, cutting boards and cooking utensils used in the preparation of gluten free foods. KOSHER DINING Kosher meals are prepared under strict rabbinical supervision and are Kof-K certified. The Kosher Eatery accepts all meal plans. HEALTHY 4 LIFE Healthy 4 Life is an easy-to-follow nutrition messaging program. The goal of the program is to point the way to healthier lifestyles by highlighting ‘better-for-you’ menu selections. Look for Healthy 4 Life logos on menus in residential dining rooms to help guide you to foods that are vegan, vegetarian, low in calories and low in fat. The program also identifies foods that are organic and grown locally. For more information, pick up a Healthy 4 Life brochure from a residential dining location.

Freshmen living in apartment style residence buildings may select a 113 Flex meal plan.
Q IF I AM A FRESHMAN AND LIVE
IN A HALL WITH A KITCHEN, WHY AM I REQUIRED TO BE ON THE MEAL PLAN? A A meal plan ensures that all freshmen students have access to at least one nutritious meal a day during their first year transition adapting to a busy schedule. The Dining program also promotes community building and creates a great first year experience.
Q ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE
FRESHMEN MANDATORY MEAL PLAN POLICY? A The University does not make exceptions to the mandatory meal plan policy (including religious, dietary, scheduling, medical and economic reasons). However, in the event you believe you have an extenuating circumstance please contact Ann Marie Powell, Director of Dining Services at
[email protected] or at (212) 998–4279.
Q CAN I CHANGE OR CANCEL MY MEAL PLAN?
A Meal plan changes and cancellations may only be made by submitting the online form via www.housing. nyu.edu/MealPlans. Forms must be
6!www.nyudining.com
submitted no later than September 14, for fall 2013 and no later than February 8, for spring 2014. Residents of traditional-style halls (Founders Hall, Brittany, Goddard, Hayden, Rubin, and Weinstein) must maintain a meal plan that includes a minimum of 14 meals per week. Freshmen living in apartment style residence halls may select a 113 Flex meal plan. Meal plan changes and cancellations are not retroactive and become effective the first Sunday following submission of the online form. Making meal plan changes or cancellations on Bursar bills and / or withholding payment for Meal Plan charges are not valid methods of modifying your meal plan.
Q WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS?
A Discuss your needs with one of our food service directors and your meal will be prepared according to your request.
If you are seeking nutritional information on healthy eating, weight maintenance and vegetarianism contact the Health Promotion Office at (212) 443-1234. You may also consult with our on-staff registered dietitian. Q WHAT IF I HAVE A SEVERE
MEDICAL CONDITION OR DISABILITY AND CAN’T USE THE MEAL PLAN? A If you believe you have a medical condition or disability that warrants an exception to the mandatory meal plan policy, you must submit a special accommodations form with supporting documentation to the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities. For forms and additional information go to www.nyu.edu/csd.
Q IF I HAVE A SEVERE FOOD ALLERGY, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?
A NYU Dining has a variety of meal
plans and dining options including kosher, gluten free, halal, vegetarian and vegan items. Dining Services will work with students who have food allergies to develop a plan for dining that accommodates their needs and provide menus with a variety of food selections. All meals are posted on the dining website at www.nyudining.com so students can make informed food selections and avoid foods they are allergic to. Many items are prepared to order and in full view to meet the student’s specific request. Warning signs are posted in the dining halls and food courts reminding patrons of possible cross-contamination during food preparation and cautioning patrons against cross-contamination with utensils, containers, plates, and shared food. Peanut butter products carrying nuts will be isolated from other foods to the extent reasonably possible and training about food allergies is provided to the dining staff. Please note that there are limitations to the type of accommodations that Dining Services can provide
and strict avoidance may be the only solution to safeguard against food allergens. Please contact Ann Marie Powell, Director of Dining Services at
[email protected] or at (212) 998–4279 for additional information or to set up an appointment with one of our dining managers or executive chefs.
Q HOW AM I CHARGED FOR MY MEAL PLAN?
A When a student signs up or changes
a meal plan membership after the beginning of a semester, the plan and charges are prorated for the remainder of that semester. Charges and refunds for all meal plans (Flex plans and Dining Dollars included) are calculated on a daily basis. Weeks begin on Sunday and end Saturday. Charges begin on the activation date, not when students begin using their plan. The fall semester is 15 weeks and charges begin on September 3, 2013. The spring semester is 16 weeks and begins on January 27, 2014. For example: If a student purchases a 75 Flex plan that begins the second week of the fall semester, they receive 14/15 of the plan, or 70 meals and 140 Dining Dollars (DD). They are charged 14/15 or 93% of the original cost of the plan. 75 meals/15 weeks = 5 meals per week, 5 meals per week X 14 = 70 meals $150 DD/15 weeks = $10 DD per week, $10 DD per week X 14 weeks = $140 DD The same principle applies for changes and cancellations. The student pays for the days they own the plan (whether used or not) and receives a credit or charge on their Bursar’s account based on that change for the remaining days of the semester.
