NZ Natural Beekeeping Conference Are you a Hobbyist beekeeper or are you considering keeping bees? Are you alarmed at the declining bee population and want to be part of the solution? Do you want to keep bees in a natural, sustainable, bee focused way? Attend our friendly, informative conference to learn, share knowledge and meet likeminded beekeepers, and would be beekeepers. rd

Date- 23 June, Saturday, 2012 commencing at 12 midday Venue - 12 Emerald Hill, Havelock North. Get directions here. Registration - We require registration to gauge number of attendees. Please register here, giving names of people attending. Cost- $10 pp. which goes towards travel costs of out of town speakers.

Programme 12 midday – welcome and introductions

12:15 Natural Beekeeping as a way to help save our Honey Bee with Marcia Meehan Marcia Meehan – natural beekeeper and blogger at Kiwi Beekeeping Top Bar Hives and Natural Beekeeping In New Zealand. Marcia is a champion of keeping bees naturally and sustainably. She teaches sustainable beekeeping throughout New Zealand.    

The theories / practicalities and importance of Natural Beekeeping here in NZ The different ways to keep bees naturally the global growth in Natural beekeeping Natural varroa treatments – what seems to be working in NZ

1:30pm Top Bar Beekeeping with Janet Luke of Green Urban Living.co.nz and Save Our Bees Charitable Trust   

What is a Top Bar Hive? pros and cons The perceived controversy surrounding Top Bar Hives

Weather permitting Janet will open up one of her Top Bar Hives in her garden and demonstrate how to manipulate combs, demonstrate the ‘prescribed’ Top Bar method for checking for AFB and how to monitor the health of your bees. (She has a hive on her balcony which is surrounded by windows so attendees can observe without having to suit up)

3pm-3:45pm Warre Hives with Daniel Martin. Daniel has been keeping bees in his backyard in Top Bar Hives and Warre’ Hives  

He will describe how a Warre’ hive works, the management of the Warre hive and the pros and cons compared to a Top Bar hive. Daniel will also have some Warre’ hives for sale on the day.

4pm-Mixing and Mingling. This may be the most important part of the conference. Meet other natural beekeepers in your area and build up a support network of likeminded beekeepers. Exchange knowledge, questions, discussions and a chance to look at an assortment of books, articles and equipment about natural beekeeping. BYO drinks around our outdoor fireplace and pizza’s from our pizza oven. Janet is happy to give a tour of her garden.
