Benny Levin, 1930 - 1994
Born in 1930, Benny Levin’s career in the entertainment industry began in his late teens when his combo, Benny Dancetime performed at the popular Joe Wheelhouse’s Bayswater Boating Club. The trial performance resulted in a seven year residency. The band played popular music and often included Benny’s own compositions. Starting to hone his entrepreneurial skills in the late 1950s under the name of BenMoss Circuit, Benny Levin toured overseas shows such as the raunchy comedy Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath. Continuing his interest in music, Benny was soon encouraging others to perform and eventually started to manage bands such as The Howard Morrison Quartet, Freddie Keil and the Kavaliers, Bunny Walters and Tania Rowles. In the 1980s, Benny Levin was operating in partnership with Craig Scott, Mike Corless and Russell Clark under the name of New Music Management, bringing major overseas performers to New Zealand including Ben E King, Gene McDaniels, Dee Dee Sharpe. Other big names including Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Dave Allan and Sir Peter Ustinov. Popular in the industry Benny Levin was awarded the Best Promoter Manager Award, 1992. Within months he was diagnosed with cancer and died in July 1993. Fellow entrepreneur Phil Warren presented the collection to the Auckland Central Library in 1994. THE SERIES LISTS Series 1
