Oban Mountaineering Club Summer 2012 Newsletter Peter Evans Last Munro – fantastic day 15 folk (Family and friends) and a cracking BBQ to finish. A better day could not have been had! Two “Golden Nuts” were presented Vaughan had found his mantelpiece and had been busy chiselling away in his shed. Peter and John Miller were the proud recipients of these prestigious pieces. nd

June 2 Sgur Na Skeine We stayed in the very comfortable hostel in Invergarry, fortunately the midge population was busy elsewhere although a few did find us. As you can see the weather was excellent and the views -

The White House Barrisdale – 14/15th/16th June – one sunny day one windy day and two wet days! (Bernie, Liz, Chris, Bill, Neil, John and Fiona) Following an early paddle to Barrisdale via a camp on the island of Sanday for one party and a paddle down from Kinloch Hourn by another, no-one needed to walk the arduous miles along the lochside, with gear! On Saturday a group Liz, Bill, Neil John and Fiona headed for Mam Barrisdale and on up onto Meall Buidhe and Luinne Bheinne, very wet misty and windy. Chris and Bernie had an adventurous paddle up to Kinloch Hourn and back.

Gairloch –Summer Week 30th June – 7th July a very comfortable house, good food and some interesting evening board games set the scene. Hills to the North of Loch Maree were climbed, Beinn a’ Mhuinidh (692m) and Meall Mheinnidh (722m) and some km of paddling local coast lines. Chris Shiona John Fiona and Laura were there for the week. The paddle round Gruinard Island (that you see in the third picture) started in thick sea mist and ended in a very lovely paddle and Island explore. One to repeat.

Forest Way Bunkhouse Lael East of Ullapool

from Bill -

On Saturday, Neil, Roger and Bill cycled to the forest gate and then up Glen Squaib. We went clockwise around the 4 Munros, finishing on Beinn Dearg. Back down "The Wall" all the way to its end. Gregor raced around 4 Fannichs we had an excellent bar meal at The Seaforth in Ullapool. Sunday, Roger and Bill went round the same Fannichs, but a wee bit slower. Clockwise, starting with An Coileachan (memories of Andy Sked's Last Munro), and finishing on Liath Mhor Fannich. Neil and Gregor biked up Strathvaich to dam and then took Am Faochagach from the rear. Excellent weather both days and a good bunkhouse in great location.

Roger Webber -Thank you for keeping me updated although I have not been a participating member of the OMC. However I have been steadily making my way through the Corbetts and did the last one, Clisham on Harris last Friday. Rather a distant peak to invite other members to travel that far. I attach a picture of the last Corbett and a few others on the way there; An Teallach from Beinn Dearg Mor and Askival from Trallval in the Rum Cuillins. ( sorry attachment did not work!)

Some comments from members From Roger Webber -Thank you Fiona for forwarding on this page which contained for me a much more interesting item below entitled "Hydration-interesting reading" which I would suggest all who use a hydration system might like to read. It refers to a book called Waterlogged in which the medical author examines all the evidence for the continuous fluid intake idea and comes to the conclusion that it is based on poor evidence and that it is better to drink when you are thirsty and not excessively, as more people have died from overth hydration than under. Taking excess salt is also not required (UK Climbing, com online publication 10 August)

From Vaughan -

I was speaking to some climbing shop staff today and also about repairs to the staff at LSR who were recommended as the best repair service company in the UK. They do boots, rucksacks, tents, waterproof jackets, running shoes, rock shoes, gaiters, awnings and most gear. They are the official repair agents for Karrimor, Asolo, Brasher, North Face, Kathmandu, Berghaus, Goretex, Peter Storm, Marmot, Meindl, Lowa, Salomon, Han Wag, and Lowe Alpine, Rohan and so on and so on. Most shops send their repair work there but they will also deal direct with any customer. They started out primarily as boot repair specialists and they carry original sole units for Brasher, Berghaus, Karrimor, Raichle, Scarpa, Meindle, Danner, Lowa, Asolo and Zamberlan but will do most boots sent to them for repair or resoling. Here is a link to their website http://www.lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk

hopefully of interest to OMC members

Greenpointing! UK Climbing 6th August Amusing to watch the exciting new Continental concept of climbing using hand placed protection into natural features.....!!Entertaining too to hear that this brings the risks of climbing above what may well be poor protection - and so this represents the mind games of purer climbing.......!!So what just what traditional Scottish climbers have been doi ng all along then - and better than putting safety bolts in every crag and boulder. Is this “Retro-Climbing”.........????? Yours aye, Vaughan
