INTRODUCTION: Obesity has been identified as a major risk factor for the development of asthma. Asthma in obese individuals tends to be more severe, does not respond as well to treatment, and is becoming a major public health issue in many countries. Asthma is a heterogeneous condition, and phenotyping of asthma patients has become a mandatory part of the diagnostic workup. At the same time, the association between the two diseases remains unclear. On the other hand, it has been shown that changes in sputum eosinophils (Eo) could predict loss of asthma control. AIM: Aim was to analyse the impact of normalising of body mass index (BMI) in obese asthma patients on sputum and blood Eo count and asthma control. PATIENTS: 140 obese patients (Body Mass Index - BMI ≥ with partially o trolled a d u o trolled asth a a d eosi ophilia i sputu a d lood were i luded. All patients were divided in two groups: examined group (n=80) and control group (n=60). Additionally, all patients were divided i IgE high ≥ IU/ l a d IgE low < IU/ l = for oth IgE low a d IgE high patients in examined group and n=30 for both IgE low and IgE high patients in control group). All patients were treated with moderate dose of inhaled corticosteroids (IGK) with no changes in dose during 3 months of study duration.
