Next Meeting, Saturday, October 18th, 1:00 P.M. Hummel Hall Hello Gents. The October meeting will be an important gathering for at least a couple of reasons. First, it is our last scheduled meeting before our Desert Classic contest on November 1st. Also, it is traditionally the Halloween theme meeting where Stephanie and David Newman bring the hauntingly delicious refreshments! This is always a fun time, so try to attend if you can. This newsletter was kind of a hurry up effort before the beginning of the work week, so I may have left a thing or two out. Also, just to be clear, bring whatever projects you have to the meetings, but if you've had something there previously then it may not make it into the newsletter. It's just a matter of space and time. Thanks.

Contest Photo Plans We would like to have an official photo booth this year to highlight the outstanding models among the entries. Best of all, the plan is to have this arrangement sponsored by Aerospace Modeler, Billy Chrisler's magazine. We are planning to have the magazine logo prominently displayed next to the booth. Billy would like to produce an article about our show for his magazine and possibly continue the process with each successive year. So, which models will be picked for special photos? Answer: when viewing the entries, AVG members will be asked to "flag" the models that look like they might be worthy of this opportunity. We can discuss this process more at the October meeting. For any of your who do not know, Bill Chrisler was the person who really started the AVG almost 14 years ago as an Air Force Officer assigned to Edwards. It is certainly appreciated that through his reassignments and the production of his magazine that he has kept in touch with the AVG membership. The following is a just a small snippet of Billy Chrisler's professional background. Dr. William P. Crisler Consultant, USAF Academy's Design & Experimental Aeronautics Group Deputy Department Head, USAF Academy's Department of Aeronautics USAF Flight Test Center X-31 Program Manager Adjunct faculty to the USAF Test Pilot School Managing Editor for Aerospace Modeler Magazine
Club Budget and Finances Curtis Stidham will have a full financial report at the October meeting.
Meeting Projects 1/35 M16 Halftrack – Tom Hamel Tom says this is a good kit, though some experience is helpful. He built it "out of the box", but added some bed rolls and other small details. The standing figure was pulled from another kit. The M16 was used in WWII and Korea and by the National Guard into the 1960's. Tom's example illustrates a Korean War piece, however Tom says the "halftrack" concept fell out of favor with the U.S. military after WWII.
1/72 XR60-1 – David Newman David continues work on his enormous Lockheed transport. Here the wings are attached and the nose and tail cone are being formed with the help of lots of auto body putty.
1/72 Italeri B-25H and Revell Hunter Mk. 6 – Nick Kiriokos Nick says the Italeri B-25H kit is a great value with good accuracy when compared to the Hasegawa B-25 kits which do not offer enough improvement to justify the higher price. One fault Nick did find with the Italeri kit is that the engine nacelles are a bit too tapered, however they do include the correct carburetor intakes for the WWII era. Nick's kit was purchased for a mere $10.00. Nick's Revell Hunter Mk. 6 is also in progress. He says the fit is nearly perfect and the parts count is low, so construction is straightforward. The decals are of good quality and the model can be built up in a colorful test aircraft scheme.
From the Home Workbench Mike Brignola JU-88S-1: Completed empennage assemblies to the body of the aircraft, used thin superglue to fill the gaps. Used Model Master enamel paints for the light blue 76 overall, then mottled with a spotted camouflage of gray violet 75, couple hours work with a Badger 100G fine tip. The cockpit was painted simulating RLM 66 grey with Humbrol panzer grey 67. Interior gear assembly and doors were painted Model Master grey 02. Eventually, the bottom surfaces will be painted black.
JU-188D-1: Similar completion and assemblies shared with the JU-88S. The cockpit was dry-brushed using Model Master enamel white which was a good contrast to the grey 66. I used Model Master FS34079 to simulate the German green 71 and Humbrol black green 70 for the upper surface splinter camouflage and 70 on the prop blades. A light blue 76 “Wellenmuster” scribble pattern was applied using the Badger 100G fine tip. You have to thin the paint to be able to spray a continuous thin line at lowest pressure, avoiding paint spatter. The bottom and sides of this aircraft will be painted black.
