the series: The Mouse and the Mo- torcycle; Ralph S. Mouse. You are invited to attend the Lacamas All School. Read on Thursday, No- vember 8th from 5:30pm.
Fall is here and along with fall comes conferences. Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled from October through December. I strongly urge you to attend them to get up-todate information on your child’s academic progress. This is a great time to ask any questions or bring up concerns that you may have regarding homework, friendships, or supporting areas of school at home. Often, parent-teacher conferences “connect the dots” so to speak between school and home, which allows us to better understand your children. If your student took the MSP last spring (grades 3rd to 5th), results have been sent home to you. A letter accompanies the test results explaining your child’s progress. Should you have further questions, fell free to speak with your child’s current teacher.

I am thankful for all you do to make Lacamas the best School for our kids! Every small task that you take on for us allows us to spend our time and energy with the students themselves and their academic needs. Our school is better due to the partnerships that we have with you, and sends a strong message to the students that their school and their education is very important to all of us. Jan Strohmaier

All School Read We are about half finished with our book Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary. Fed up with his family, Ralph decides to hop on his motorcycle and head down the road to Happy Acres Camp. Unfortunately, life at camp is not all peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! A strict watchdog, a mouse-hungry cat, and a

troubled boy named Garf keep Ralph on his toes and away from his precious motorcycle. Perhaps home is not such a bad place to be, if only Ralph can find a way to get there again! If your family has enjoyed this book you may want to check out other books in the series: The Mouse and the Motorcycle; Ralph S. Mouse. You are invited to attend the Lacamas All School Read on Thursday, November 8th from 5:30pm 7:00pm.The evening will provide activities connected to our book, Runaway Ralph. We will have the following activities available for our Lacamas Families. ♥ Bike Safety Poster Contest winners announced ♥ Photo Op with Ralph ♥ Story Telling ♥ Singing around the “Camp Fire” ♥ Book Fair open in the library

vember 20. The children are learning about the different types of homes, clothing, and food. We will also read many stories about the first Thanksgiving and the Pilgrim’s voyage on the Mayflower. In October we studied the pumpkin life cycle and will take a

field trip to the Zellerbach Administrative Center Community Garden on October 26th. Each child will be able to take a pumpkin from the field. It has been a busy and fun time this fall in Kindergarten!

# October is Fire Safety Month! We are reading books related to this topic. Ask your child to retell details from his or her favorite “Fire” story. We hope you are enjoying our all-school read, Runaway Ralph. The first graders are doing a terrific job of listening for “interesting words,” sophisticated words that enrich your

Steady as she goes! 2nd graders are studying the laws of “Balance and Motion” in science. We observed, experimented and compared how objects balance, and roll. You can take this a step further at home – pull out those cars, trucks, roller skates, and marbles, create your own ramps and speed away! Have your

In math we continue to build number sense by practicing doubles through 9+9 and playing with place value. Students are learning that another name for 10 is 3+7 or 6+4. What are other names for 10? Please remember that part of the second grade monthly homework plan is for each child to complete the 20-20 READ TO SUCEED form.

We are currently finishing our study of Sound. Our next Social Studies unit is Maps and Globes. This year, we will start with the hemispheres, oceans, and continents, but will mainly focus on the North American continent: its regions and geographical features. In Math, we are diving into Unit 2

in Math Connects, Using Addition to Solve Problems. Unit 3 will focus on using subtraction to solve problems. Thank you for encouraging your students to complete their weekly math as well as spelling homework.

In Writing, our focus is to build a strong paragraph that contains a topic sentence, descriptive details, and a solid conclusion. Third grade students are working hard through each step of the writing process.

In Reading, we are focusing on the elements of Fiction text. We are also building our reading stamina, and increasing our reading fluency.

" % The fourth graders continue to be busy with many skills. In reading, the emphasis is on recognizing and understanding non-fiction test, author’s purpose, and using the dictionary. Many students have accumulated 10 points in Accelerated Reader and others are progressing toward 25 points and more. Math is becoming more challeng-

"

Students are working on creating strong paragraphs by developing main ideas, topic sentences, and

supporting their ideas with clear details. Many of our fourth graders have displayed courtesy through the month of October and are now ready to work on ways to demonstrate the character trait of responsibility.

In Science, students are investigating how light is a form of energy that travels in straight lines from a light source. They are also discovering how the apparent color of an object is the result of the light it reflects. Students are continuing to work with decimals in math. They have learned the concept 1

ing as the students work toward the concepts of multiplication, graphing, probability, and problem solving. Writing explanations of solutions to math problems is a primary focus.
