TPM Sensor Activation Tool Positioning When performing the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) learn procedure, it’s critical to properly position the TPM sensor tool — special tool J-46079/EL-46079 or the new orange activation tool EL-50448. The TPM tool antenna should NOT be pointed at the tire valve stem or held at a significant angle in a variety of directions. TIP: Make sure the activation tool battery is fully charged. To begin the learn procedure, enable the TPM learn mode (indicated by a double horn chirp) using a scan tool or the Driver Information Center buttons. The vehicle turn signals will illuminate to provide a visual indicator of which TPM sensor should be activated next. Starting at the left front tire, position the tool so the tool antenna is perpendicular (90 degrees) against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem location. If the tool is not held in the correct location, the sensor will not be activated. With the tool correctly positioned, press and release the activate button once. The transmit indicator on the tool should show that the sensor activation signal is being transmitted. A horn chirp will sound when the sensor information is learned. The sensor information also will be displayed on tool J-46079.

TPM Sensor Activation Tool Positioning – continued from page 1 TIP: Do not press and hold the activate button on tool J-46079. The tool will not send a signal if the button is depressed too long. In the event that a particular sensor is being activated and the horn does not chirp, it may be necessary to rotate the wheel to a different position because the sensor signal may be being blocked by another component. Repeat the sensor activation sequence.
Special tool J-46079/EL-46079
After the horn chirp for the left front TPM sensor, the right front turn signal will illuminate to indicate to perform the activation sequence on the right front tire. Be sure to position the TPM tool correctly against the tire sidewall near the valve stem. Next, move to the right rear sensor and then the left rear sensor. When the last sensor has been learned, the BCM will exit the learn mode and a double horn chirp will sound.

Check VIN/Date Breakpoints before Repairs A best practice is to always check the latest bulletins for any related information when a vehicle comes into the dealership for service. However, always keep in mind that not all repair information applies to all vehicles listed in a bulletin. Before beginning any repairs outlined in a bulletin or PI (Preliminary Information), be sure to check the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and/or build date breakpoints, if provided. If a vehicle does not fall within the specified breakpoints, the repair information simply does not apply.
TIP: Not all vehicles within the breakpoints may be involved. Vehicle eligibility should be confirmed prior to beginning repairs by using the Required Field Actions section in the Global Warranty system.
Updating Calibrations Control module calibrations are released to address a variety of conditions. However, just as with bulletin information, they are not a fix-all and a control module should not be reprogrammed unless the calibration specifically addresses a particular condition affecting the operation of the control module. A valid reason for reprogramming should always be verified by a bulletin or PI that applies to the vehicle in question. A control module should not be reprogrammed simply because there are updated calibrations available. If a control module is not configured with the correct calibration software, it will not control all of the vehicle features properly.
EI Bulletins During the bulletin review, also look for Engineering Information (EI) bulletins to determine if additional information about specific vehicle conditions is being requested by GM. In order for GM to obtain technical information first-hand from technicians, the EI process requests specific information prior to or during the repair process that can help GM Engineering “root cause” a vehicle condition and develop/validate a field fix. This process also compensates the dealership/technician for their time and effort to provide critical information.
Before repairs, check the VIN/Date breakpoints on bulletins and PIs.
Vehicles Involved To determine if a vehicle in for service falls within the VIN breakpoints, compare the last few digits of the VIN with the VIN breakpoints listed in the bulletin.
TIP: Vehicles that qualify for the Engineering Information will be flagged with a PIE number in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) Investigate Vehicle History (GWM/IVH) link.
The last eight digits in the 17-digit VIN are used to identify breakpoints in production. Digit 10
Model year
Digit 11
Plant code
Digits 12-17
Production sequence number
Technicians should reference the EI prior to beginning any repairs and complete the Engineering Information per the instructions. A unique labor operation is set up for each Engineering Information issue. Refer to Bulletin #04-00-89-053E: Engineering Information Process for more information about EI bulletins.
From 2000-2009, the model year is identified by the number of the year (2002 = 2, 2003 = 3). Beginning in 2010, the model year is identified by a letter (2010 = A, 2011 = B)
Submit Field Product Report Technicians play a key role in reporting product issues and driving the content of bulletins. If a vehicle in for service exhibits the same conditions as covered in a bulletin or PI, but the VIN falls outside the specified breakpoints, file a Field Product Report.
The production sequence number is a consecutive six-digit number, starting each new model year with 100001. For example, for a bulletin to apply to a 2007 7500/8500 Series Chevrolet Kodiak or T-Series or a GMC TopKick or T-Series truck, it must have been built within these VIN breakpoints:
Year
Division
Model
From
Through
2007
Chevrolet
Kodiak
7F401045
7F413837
2007
Chevrolet
T-Series
7F400286
7F418027

TopKick
7F400120
7F419952
2007

7F400342
7F419659
Technical information on various vehicle conditions is extremely important to resolving product issues. A Field Product Report should be submitted any time repetitive conditions, PDI concerns, quality issues, or other product conditions are encountered. Timely communication of concerns to GM Engineering helps contribute to quick product resolutions. Refer to Bulletin #02-00-89-002K: Information for Dealers on How to Submit a Field Product Report for guidelines on when to submit a report. (In Canada, refer to Bulletin 10-00-89-006.) Visible Convertible Top Side Tension Cables The side tension cables that run along the side edge of the 2011-2013 Camaro Convertible folding top may be visible when the top is in the closed and latched position, most commonly after folding top replacement or repairs. The cables may be visible on one or both sides of the vehicle near the rear corners of the front windows. Incorrect routing of the side tension cables may cause this condition.
anchor through it. Route the cable through the backside of the plastic retainer. Once all components are reinstalled, cycle the folding top several times to confirm that the side tension cables are not visible from underneath the folding top material. Also ensure the plastic side rail retainers stay in position.

Ambient Temperature Sensor Reads High
New Anti-Chip Rocker Panel Coating
Some 2006-2013 Impalas may have an ambient temperature reading over 200° F (93.3° C) in the scan tool HVAC data. Do not replace the HVAC module for this condition when diagnosing HVAC concerns.
The 2013 Silverado and Sierra Extended Cab and Crew Cab models now have a new anti-chip coating applied to the rocker panels. The Anti-chip rocker panel coating anti-chip coating began being applied mid-model year to further enhance durability and appearance.
Vehicles that have an RPO U2E instrument cluster do not have an ambient temperature sensor, so the data in the scan tool is a default reading. Vehicles that have an RPO UH8 instrument cluster may have an ambient temperature sensor. The sensor is included with the RPO UH8 instrument cluster on some vehicle trim levels while it is not available with the RPO UH8 clusters on other trim levels. To determine if the vehicle has an ambient temperature sensor: • Check the GM Online Order Reference Guide • Check that the vehicle has the RPO UH8 instrument cluster and the Driver Information Center has an ambient temperature sensor reading
The coating is body color and, in some cases, the vehicle owner may not notice this new feature.
• Check for an ambient temperature sensor installed in the vehicle (See the appropriate Service Information for the location of the sensor).
The anti-chip coating should not be mistaken as an aftermarket coating applied by the owner. If rocker panel repairs are required, the coating should be reapplied according to the dealership’s paint supplier’s recommendations for anti-chip coatings.
If the vehicle does not have an ambient temperature sensor, do not allow the scan tool data to influence your diagnosis of the HVAC system. Thanks to Dave Eplin

Inaccurate Outside Temperature Display
Hum Noise and ABS Light Illuminated
Owners of some 2012 Escalade models, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra, and Yukon models equipped with Automatic Climate Control (RPO CJ2) may comment that the outside air temperature display is inaccurate when starting the vehicle, or that the display is slow to change/update after driving the vehicle.
On some 2012-2013 LaCrosse, Regal and 2013 Malibu Eco models equipped with eAssist (RPO HP6), there may be a hum noise heard in the right front of the vehicle. In addition, the ABS MIL may be illuminated or a Service Brake Assist message may be displayed on the Driver Information Center. DTCs C027B (Brake Booster Electric Vacuum Pump) and C0040 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit) may be set.
The ambient air temperature sensor is mounted underhood and can be affected by city driving, idling, and restarting a hot engine. Therefore, the HVAC control module filters the value of the ambient air temperature sensor for temperature display. The ambient air temperature displayed is updated under certain criteria listed in the Service Information under Air Temperature Description and Operation. If, after normal diagnosis and review of the Air Temperature Description and Operation, a repair is not found, reprogram the HVAC Control Module with the updated calibration currently available in TIS2Web. Thanks to Jim Will
Flutter Noise at High RPM
These conditions may be caused by a misrouted or unsecured forward lamp harness Check the forward lamp harness contacting the crank pulley, air conditioning compressor pulley or accessory drive belt. Repair any wiring or replace the forward lamp harness as needed. Correctly route and properly secure the harness. Once repairs are completed, confirm the proper brake booster vacuum pump operation using the GDS 2. Thanks to Christopher Crumb
eAssist Parts Restriction Update On 2012-2013 LaCrosse, Regal and 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist (RPO HP6), the components on restriction through the GM Technical Assistance Center (TAC) have been updated. The following components are on restriction: • Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) • Generator Control Module (GCM) • Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Pump A flutter noise may be heard during a high RPM deceleration from highway speeds on some 2012-2013 Camaro ZL1 models (6.2L supercharged V8 engine, RPO LSA).
• Generator Battery Control Wiring Junction Block • Generator Battery Disconnect Relay • Battery Energy Control Module
TIP: Owners may note the noise as an engine or supercharger noise. Do not replace the supercharger for this condition.
• Battery Disconnect Switch Wiring Harnesses 1 and 2
Inspect the transmission ID tag to determine if it is making contact with the transmission tunnel. Reposition the tag as necessary to eliminate the noise condition.
In addition, the Starter Generator (MGU) remains on restriction through the Product Quality Center (PQC). When ordering the MGU, contact the PQC.
Thanks to James Parkhurst
• Generator Battery • Generator Control and Battery Module (Powerpack)
If a complete Generator Control and Battery Module (Powerpack) is needed, call TAC to have the order authorized first before calling the local Electronic Service Center (ESC) to place the order. Thanks to Brian Ciaverella
