How to Be an Effective Listener Written by: Jenna Green

Good listeners find ways to improve their listening skills by understanding the listening process and learning how to overcome potential listening skill barriers. For instance, one common barrier is prejudgment- making up your mind before truly hearing what the other person has to say. Assumptions do not work in every area of your life. What makes an effective listener? Effective listeners: • Listen actively • Look for opportunities to learn • Don’t assume they already know everything that’s important to know • Don’t interrupt whenever they disagree or don’t understand • Make frequent eye contact with the speaker • Stay focused on the speaker and the content • Ask meaningful and empowering questions • Use body language to express their interest • Become very attentive • Do not interrogate • Do not try to think of their response in their head while listening
