Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Extends Condolences to the Families and Greater Community of Orlando WASHINGTON – The National Executive Committee, National Executive Board and members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida June 12. The Sorority, as a whole, extends prayers and sincere condolences to the nearly 50 families of the victims, countless survivors and the entire Orlando community as they recover and heal. “It is never easy to accept the loss of life, but when lives are taken due to senseless acts of hatred and terrorism, it makes losses such as these extremely difficult to even comprehend,” said Dr. Paulette C. Walker, National President and CEO of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “Our hearts break for the families of the victims and survivors while our prayers remain with them as they attempt to cope with this travesty.” During the organization’s 51st National Convention and centennial anniversary in 2013, Delta Sigma Theta passed a resolution urging Congress to pass legislation to ban civilian ownership of assault/military type weapons. The resolution also called for: a limitation on the number of rounds an ammunition magazine will fire; a 3-day waiting period prior to gun purchase; background checks for gun buyers; a creation of a national registry of gun ownership to aid law enforcement in tracking guns used illegally. In August 2015, Delta Sigma Theta also released a statement announcing its staunch support of the Department of Justice in its review of gun reform policies. “The time is long overdue for lawmakers to draft, vote on and implement legislation that will disarm hate and end even the possibility of mass shootings in this country,” said Dr. Walker. “If the shootings that occurred in Sandy Hook, Charleston, and San Bernardino could not persuade them to take action, the additional deaths of these 49 innocent people should move national and state legislators towards making America safe for all citizens.”
