PBS-featured Michigan author Doc Fletcher writes about the special joy of paddling. Join us for a photographic journey down rivers selected from his books, with an emphasis on Fletcher’s recent trips on Wisconsin rivers, as well as the interesting histories told of the nearby towns. There will be a drawing for a “free canoe or kayak trip” down one of Wisconsin’s or Michigan’s rivers after the program!

David Thoreau’s Journey West : A Transcendental Travelogue

19th century naturalist Henry David Thoreau is most often associated with his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts, and with its Walden Pond. But in the Spring of 1861, the author of WALDEN and Horace Mann, Jr. embarked on a two-month trip that led them into the Midwest and through Wisconsin. During this slide presentation, you will learn about their routes, the sights they saw and wrote about, and what you can see in those same places today. Come help us commemorate the 150th anniversary of Thoreau's last, longest, and least-known excursion! Corinne H. Smith has written a book about the journey which will be published this summer. Smith also maintains a website with a great deal of information about the trip including the exact route taken on the trip. She now lives an hour west of Walden Pond, and works as a librarian at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts. Pie will be served! Over, Please! Please!

July 18 “Manoominike: Gathering the Good Seed” 6:30 p.m. Nick VanderPuy--Journalist, Public Radio Reporter Nick VanderPuy, formerly with WXPR, will discuss the deep connections between wild rice and the Ojibway people. He will play his new audio documentary, “Manoominike: Gathering the Good Seed.” VanderPuy is well known for his abilities to report on complex and nuanced subjects, translating them into engaging presentations.

July 25 One World …One Ocean…Many Stories…! 6:30 p.m. Tom Kastle - Singer, Songwriter, Tall Ship Captain and Teller of Tales This unique and multi-talented performer will present a hands on-look, in story and song, at diverse maritime cultures from around the globe and around the block, from the South Pacific to the Great Lakes. Tom Kastle has one foot in the singer/songwriter world where his original songs run from the romantic to the nautical. The other foot is firmly planted in the traditional maritime world where he is a shanty singer and US Coast Guard licensed captain.

Author Series – William Kent Krueger The “Cork O’Connor” Mystery Series

William Kent Krueger is the author of 10 novels in the “Cork O’Connor” mystery series. Vermillion Drift as his latest, and is a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award and is on the New York Times bestseller list. Booklist writes that Krueger’s series “gets darker and more elegantly written with every book. Minnesota has become a hotbed of hard-boiled crime fiction, and the Cork O’Connor novels are among the best.”
