Oracle Solaris Cluster 4 Maximum Availability for Oracle Solaris

Oracle Solaris Cluster 4 is a comprehensive High Availability and Disaster Recovery solution for Oracle SPARC and x86 environments based on Oracle Solaris 11. It combines extreme service availability for applications and virtualized workloads, operational flexibility, agile deployments and simplified administration for traditional or cloud-based deployments.

KEY FEATURES

Oracle Solaris Cluster enables

customers to build highly-available

enterprise environments based on

Oracle Solaris. It offers:

• Deep

integration with Oracle Solaris for fastest failure detection and recovery

Extreme Service Availability In a global economy, any downtime is undesirable. 24x7x365 is a requirement. IT downtime costs an organization in terms of lost sales and customers, harm to the company’s reputation and wages for people unable to perform their duties while the system or site is down. Oracle Solaris Cluster helps businesses protect their missioncritical applications by providing: •

Reduced Unplanned Downtime: Integrated with Oracle Solaris at the kernel-level, Oracle Solaris Cluster offers the most reliable and fastest failure detection on Oracle servers and storage. Together with Oracle Solaris fault management architecture and Oracle Solaris predictive self healing, it helps limit the impact of hardware outages by providing automated recovery at all levels: servers, storage, and networking. Oracle Solaris Cluster delivers application-specific failure detection and recovery, orchestrating also the recovery of the resources the application depends on, thereby significantly reducing unplanned downtime.

Lower Planned Downtime: Planned downtime can be due to multiple reasons hardware changes, software upgrades, and environment reconfigurations. Oracle Solaris Cluster can help reduce or even prevent planned downtime. It manages the graceful switchover of applications with their complete ecosystem to alternate hardware thus limiting application outage. It manages live migration for virtualized workloads deployed on Oracle Solaris Kernel Zone and Oracle VM for SPARC domains to lower maintenance impact. It supports the Oracle Solaris Image Packaging System enabling faster and safer system updates: one simple command to update or roll back both operating system and cluster software environments.

Accelerated Service Recovery: Oracle Solaris Cluster can extend essential HA capabilities, such as application data and services failover, to a campus or metropolitan area, limiting service outages due to local problems, minimizing human error, and improving recovery time and overall services availability. For even higher business continuity requirements Oracle Solaris Cluster further broadens its capabilities to orchestrated disaster recovery across widely dispersed sites offering accelerated automated failover and recovery of complete eco-systems supporting multi-tiered applications and multiple replication solutions. Whether in case of a complete site disaster or for planned maintenance, the complete consolidation can be moved over in a managed and organized sequence to a remote, secondary site to continue mission-critical business services. These capabilities lead to significant

gains in terms of reliability and speed of recovery and reduce risk attached to long service outages.

Operational Flexibility Whether running in enterprise data centers or cloud environments, mission-critical applications require the same high service level that can only be achieved by a high availability solution. Nobody wants to choose between business protection, operational flexibility and virtualization efficiency. Oracle Solaris 11 delivers “no compromise” virtualization allowing enterprise workloads to be run within a virtual environment at no performance cost. Oracle Solaris Cluster extends those capabilities with native highavailability, protecting applications running inside virtual environments as well as the virtual environment themselves, to provide the flexibility required for the businesses specific operational requirements. HA for virtual environments Whether it is for Oracle Solaris Zones or Oracle VM for SPARC domains Oracle Solaris Cluster provides simple however extremely effective protection and recovery: it monitors, restarts and automatically fails over VMs to other hosts in case of system failure. Oracle Solaris Cluster offers also the possibility to migrate the environments across the different cluster hosts for maintenance, load balancing or simply resource optimization taking into account dependencies, priorities and load, delivering a cost effective resource management solution. Cold, warm or live migration can be used with both Oracle Solaris Kernel Zones or Oracle VM for SPARC domains. With Failover Zones as well as with Failover Guest Domains (Oracle VM for SPARC) Oracle Solaris Cluster supports Oracle Solaris 10 or Oracle Solaris 11. HA for Applications Oracle Solaris Cluster synthesizes HA and virtualization technologies for a unique and perfect foundation to consolidate multiple applications in a single physical cluster while providing the application specific behavior required for highest service availability and RELATED PRODUCTS

Agile Deployment and Simplified Administration Agility and simplification are key factors for businesses moving to Cloud environments. Oracle Solaris Cluster is leveraging the latest Oracle Solaris lifecycle management innovations to deliver streamlined deployment of clustered configurations. Less time is spent on installation and cloning of physical and virtual clusters, patching and update of cluster nodes, leading to lower operational costs. With Oracle Solaris Unified Archives format, cluster configurations can be recovered or cloned easily and rapidly either as physical clusters or virtual clusters. Like Oracle Solaris, Oracle Solaris Cluster offers IPS packages and a networked support repository enabling one-step patching to both operating systems and cluster software images. To further improve cluster operations a new browser based graphical user interface offers a single point access to status, configuration and management capabilities. Its topology, tree and table views offer easy navigation inside cluster instances both in local or multi-cluster configurations facilitating operations, monitoring, and diagnostics. The management interface also offers additional built-in wizards guiding the administrator step by step through the creation of a cluster, the set-up of HA for VMs or the configuration of disaster recovery orchestration.
