Now I can keep up with my friends on trips, walk the dog, and be a better nurse, because I have absolutely no pain. I wouldn’t have orthopedic surgery anyplace else.” Mary Hankinson, St. Mary Nurse and Patient

2 V. hand and upper extremity surgery St. Mary specializes in reconstructive hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder surgery, tendon surgery, and carpal tunnel surgery, providing university-level care in a community setting. Orthopedic hand surgeons receive special training in treating problems of the hand and wrist, including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendonitis, fractures, nerve compression and nerve damage, ganglion cysts, athletic injuries, and trauma. 2 VI. SPINE AND NECK SERVICES St. Mary back and neck specialists know that everyone’s problem — and solution — is unique. That’s why we offer more than 20 different approaches to relieve pain. State-of-the-art treatments and minimally invasive services include: 2 Minimally invasive spine surgery — safer, faster healing, more precise, reduced complications, quicker recovery, and return to work 2 Lumbar discectomy procedures 2 Minimally invasive lumbar fusion 2 Surgical management of spinal pain • Spinal Cord Stimulators • Lumbar Drain • Morphine Pump 2 Kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive spinal surgery procedure used to treat painful, progressive vertebral body collapse/fracture (VCFs), is especially helpful for patients with osteoporosis. The innovative technique combines vertebroplasty with balloon catheter technology. Insertion of an inflatable bone tamp, under imaging guidance, restores the vertebral body to its original height. Bone cement is used to fill vertebral cavities, strengthening and stabilizing the spine. The technique provides a range of benefits: • Fracture pain is reduced or eliminated • Restores the vertebral body to original height and shape • Prevents further vertebral collapse

• Can be performed under intravenous sedation with local anesthetic or under general anesthetic • Little or no physical therapy is required • Patients can almost immediately return to their former lifestyles 2 Vertebroplasty is an image-guided, minimally invasive procedure used to strengthen a fractured vertebra that has been most commonly (but not exclusively) caused by osteoporosis. Vertebroplasty is performed so the patient can return to their functional abilities and prevent further vertebral collapse. It is usually successful at alleviating the pain caused by compression fractures. Under mild sedation anesthesia and with image-guided x-ray, a small amount of orthopedic cement is injected through a needle into the vertebral body. The cement is mixed with a powder containing barium or tantalum, which allows it to be seen on the x-ray. When the cement is injected, it is like a thick paste that hardens quickly. Usually each vertebral body is injected on both the right and left sides, just off the midline of the spine. Within just a few hours, patients are up and returning to activities.

“If a patient does not respond to physical therapy or other conservative approaches for back pain, surgery may be needed, but with the advances in minimally invasive surgery and pain management, patients experience faster recovery times and less pain overall.” JAMES ZASLAVSKY, DO Orthopedic Surgeon St. Mary St. Mary Orthopedic Orthopedic Center Center | 11 | 11
