What is a Graph?

The TI-84 Calculator has many graphing modes, including function, parametric and polar. Each of these requires a formula for the function to be graphed. The calculator can also graph directly from lists of points, without having a formula for the function being graphed.

Graphing numbers

A graph is a visual representation of mathematical information.

A single list of numbers can be graphed on a number line.

Often, properties and relationships among numbers can be seen more readily visually. The properties of geometry can be used with graphs to explain and expand these relationships.

Two lists of related numbers can be graphed on a plane. This plane can use rectangular or polar coordinates. Three lists of related numbers can be graphed in space. Four or more lists are harder to visualize.

Graphing with lists When we wish to created a graph using lists of numbers, rather than formulas we are doing a form graphing known as list plotting. For reasons that will become clearer later, list plotting is often associated with statistical plotting on the TI-84 calculator.

A scientist has studied the effects of different densities of populations of the gypsy moth on the supporting environments. She has two lists which she would like to present graphically.

Step 1: Turn on List Graphing The second function of the y = Key is STAT PLOT. Pressing this key bring up the menu on the lower left. Select choice 1: Plot 1 to obtain the menu on the lower right. On the right menu, highest On and Press Enter to activate list plotting. STAT PLOT Menu

Step 3: Enter the Window

The STAT key on the calculator has three submenus: EDIT, CALC and TESTS

The regular WINDOW key used for function graphing is used for graphing with lists.

The first option on the EDIT submenu is EDIT. This gives a table into which the data is entered

The appropriate x and y information is entered.

Step 4: Draw the Graph The regular GRAPH key used for function graphing is also used for graphing with lists. The TRACE key works as usual, as the cursors jumps from point to point.

Step 5: Turn Off Listing Graphing Reverse the process of turning ON list graphing by selecting STAT PLOT (2nd function, y=), selecting PLOT1 and then turn off the list plotting. If you forget to do this step, you may get “weird” results later when attempting to do a regular graph.

Graphing with Lists Worksheet 7-05 Rectangular Graphing, Expanded Answers: 1.

Graphing with lists allows x-y graphing to be done without knowing a formula to be graphed, but using specific points on the graph. Often graphs constructed from data lists are used to suggest the type of regression analysis to be done on data to obtain a formula describing the data.
