1 Summary

B iological surveys of

34

sublittoral sites around the calf of Man (Isle of Man, Irish Sea) and

adjacent areas were carried out by SCUBA diving during the summers of

1991

and

1 992.

In this

document, species l ists are provided for each site and depth profiles showing the dominant organisms are presented for several localities. The clear water and strong tidal streams around the calf support support bottom-dwelling communities, dominated below the kelp zone by filter feeding invertebrates, which are unusually rich for the Irish Sea. Several notable species are reported, including new records for the Irish Sea or for the British Isles as a whole. The calf has an exceptionally high faunal diversity, clearly greater than that of three larger localities, in adjacent areas of the British Isles, which have been the subject of comparable surveys. 2 Introduction

Since

1 892 a

considerable amount of taxonomic work on the flora and fauna of the Isle of Man

has been carried out at Port Erin Marine Laboratory. Particularly detailed faunistic work includes a study of the nudibranch fauna (Miller tunicate fauna ( Herdman

1 886).

1 96 1 );

the bryozoan fauna (Eggleston

1 968);

and the

Most of the taxonomic work carried out around the shores of the

Isle of Man is summarized by Bruce et

at. ( 1963)

for the fauna, and Knight & Parke

the algae. Less work has focused on the Calf itself. However Russell

( 1 966)

( 1 931)

for

did a detailed study

of the shore vegetation, and concluded that the calf had the most exposed shores of the Isle of Man but that a range of intermediate and sheltered habitats were also found. The possibility of designating the waters around the calf of Man as a marine nature reserve has been suggested for many years and a consultation document was issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in May

1 992.

2.1 Aims of survey The aims of this survey report were to focus on the Calf in order to do the following:

1 . To describe the range of habitats, communities and species present around 2.

the cal f of Man.

To highlight species of interest, such as new records for the Irish Sea or the Isle of Man.

3. To provide data for the assessment of the calf of Man as a proposed marine nature reserve. 3. Methods 3.1 Survey techniques

The main approach used in this survey fal ls into the category of a 'Phase

1 990).

2'

survey (Hiscock,

The range of habitats, communities and conspicuous species were noted by direct

observation by divers at a variety of sites. For each site the habitats and communities present were described and a species list compiled. Sketch profiles of the main habitat features and communities present were also made. The depth zones surveyed by the divers are given as metres below sea level (BSL) or as metres below chart datum (BCD); the latter was used when the depth below the surface had been corrected for the height of the tide. In many cases an abundance scale, as defined by H iscock

( 1990),

was applied to each of the species present: superabundant,

abundant, common, frequent, occasional, rare. In other cases species were recorded on a presence/ absence scale. MNCR recording forms containing site and habitat information and a species list for each habitat are currently stored at Port Erin Marine Laboratory. The species names are those used in the Marine Conservation Society Species Directory, Picton et al. (in press). 3.2 Photography

Photographs were taken by B EP to record particular habitats and species of interest. Copies of these slides are currently held by the calf Marine Trust. A list of these slides is given in Appendix 3.

3

..

3.3 Location of the dive sites.

I n June of 1 9 9 1 a team of 1 4 divers carried out a sublittoral sUIVey of the Calf of Man. During this period 30 sites were sUIVeyed. Fig. 1 shows the location of the sites visited by the sUIVey team and Table 1 lists their grid reference and allocated site number. Previous records from Chicken Rock and Bowes Rock (although these sites are not within the proposed reseIVe boundaries) are also included because of their proximity to the Calf. Several sites were revisited in June 1 992 and again in August of the same year, by B. Picton, I. Lawler and C. Morrow.

Site description: There were very large stable boulders in the infralittoral zone, with Laminaria hyperborea dominant down to 1 0m below chart datum. Saccorhiza polyschides was dominant in a band below this, down to 1 3m. There was an abundant understory flora, with Odonthalia dentata, Phycodrys rubens and Delesseria sanguinea being most conspicuous. From 1 3 to 22m below chart datum there were massive boulders with A lcyonium digitatum on the vertical and under surfaces and rich red algal turf on the upper surfaces. Actinothoe sphyrodeta and Parasmittina trispinosa were common on all of the boulders. From 22 to 23m BCD there was a plain of gravel and cobbles. Hydroids and Antedon bifida were conspicuous whilst Cerianthus lloydii and Cereus pedunculatus only occurred in the sandy parts of the sediment. Foliose red algae were sparse, Phycodrys rubens and Dictyota dichotoma being most abundant.

This site consisted of a gentle slope oflarge and small boulders. The surfaces of the boulders were dominated by Laminaria hyperborea and Tubularia indivisa. The kelp plants were heavily encrusted with sponges, ascidians, hydroids and epiphytic red algae. This area was affected by very strong tidal currents. Species list : SPONGES

Appendix 5.

Explanation of tenns used to describe sublittoral zonation.

SHALLOW

(Littoral zone - the shore, above extreme low water of spring tides

=

ELWS .

Not covered in this

survey. ) Sublittoral fringe - narrow band forming interface between littoral zone and sublittoral zone.

Not

investigated thoroughly on this survey . Subl ittoral zone - extends below ELWS. Infrali ttoral (sub)zone - shallow sublittoral dominated by light-loving algae.

Upper infra l i ttoral

-

dominated by a kelp canopy of Laminaria spp. with an understorey

of foliose red al gae.

Lower infral ittoral - progressively thinner kelp cover with increasing depth, eventually leaving i lluminated surfaces dominated by foliose red algae. Circalittoral (sub)zone - algal cover much reduced even on upward-facing surfaces, animals dominant. Upper circalittoral - scattered foliose red algae remain. Lower circali ttoral - folio se red algae absent.
