Call for Papers Theme Issue of the Springer Journal Personal and Ubiquitous Computing on
Automotive User Interf aces and Interactive Applications in the Car Coedited by Albrecht Schmidt, Andrew Kun, Anind Dey and Susanne Boll Following the first two successful conferences on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications (http://www.auto‐ui.org/) we are proud to announce a call for papers on this topic for a Theme Issue of the Springer Journal on Personal and Ubiquitous Computing.
Theme In‐car electronic devices are becoming ubiquitous. Drivers and passengers use these devices because they perceive them as providing a valuable service. Some of these devices, such as collision warning systems, assist drivers in performing the primary task in a vehicle which is driving. Others provide information on myriad subjects or entertain the driver and passengers. A problem that arises from the proliferation of in‐car devices is that they may distract drivers from the primary task of driving, with possibly disastrous results. Research focusing on how in‐car user interfaces can be designed so as to avoid distracting the driver while still providing a valuable service is welcome. This is a challenging task for car manufacturers and OEMs, but also for the designers of devices that are brought in to the car, such as portable personal navigation devices and MP3 players. We also welcome research that addresses driving safety and the constructive role of in‐car devices, applications and user interface in this domain. Further areas of research we seek submissions from are information, education, and entertainment systems in the context of the car; for drivers as well as for passengers.
Topics Topics include, but are not limited to: • new concepts for in‐car user interfaces • multi‐modal in‐car user interfaces • in‐car speech user interfaces • text input and output while driving • multimedia interfaces and in‐car entertainment • evaluation of in‐car user interfaces • methods and tools for automotive user interface research • development tools and methods for automotive user interfaces • automotive user interface frameworks and toolkits • detecting and estimating user intentions • detecting user distraction and estimating cognitive load • user interfaces for assistive functionality • biometrics and physiological sensors as a user interface component • using sensors and context for interactive experiences in the car • user interfaces for information access while driving • user interfaces for navigation systems • applications and user interfaces for inter‐vehicle communication • in‐car gaming
Schedule and Important Dates • • • •
28th February 2011: Deadline for submission of manuscripts 3rd of May 2011: Notification of acceptance 15th of June 2011: Submission of camera ready papers and revisions Publication in the Springer digital library in 2011 as Online First (shortly after the final camera ready version is received); publication in print later.
Submission We seek high quality and original submission on the topic of Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Applications in the Car. We have two submission categories: •
•
Research papers In this category submission of manuscripts describing original research are invited (between 4000 and 8000 words, a figure equals 250 words). Extended versions of papers published at the Automotive UI conferences are explicitly welcome, however, papers must be extended and contain at least 35% new content. Design Sketches In this category we invite design oriented and product oriented work showing original and novel ideas and concepts. The final publication form for this category will be on a single page (in exceptional cases 2 pages). We expect that submissions have a textual part of about 200 words and one or more images.
At this stage no specific format is required, however we recommend following the layout guidelines given on the publishers web page (ftp://ftp.springer.de/pub/Word/journals/). The manuscript for the initial submission should be in PDF and should be sent by email to the guest editors at journal@auto‐ui.org. If the paper is an extended version of a previous publication, please include a PDF of the already published paper.
Review Board and Process Each paper will be reviewed by at least 3 independent experts in the field. Reviewers will be mainly recruited from the program committees of the automotive UI conferences (see www.auto‐ui.org).
