CARIBBEAN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS

The Macmillan School Dictionary is completely relevant to the needs of young people who are studying a wide range of subjects and preparing for school examinations. It explains - clearly and accurately the vocabulary needed for successful study in any of the key school subjects.

Laurie Sealy and Sandra Moore Bright Sparks is a series designed to shine a light on the potential of each child. With a generous emphasis on problem solving, Bright Sparks connects mathematics to familiar real life experiences in the Caribbean. It helps students see that Mathematics is far more than learning calculations, but rather something all around them, infused in everything they do. In each of the seven Student’s Books from Kindergarten level (Book K) to the culmination of Primary School (Book 6), higher thinking skills are systematically developed. Explanations and examples introduce each new concept, a feature proving invaluable to teachers, students and parents alike. Bright Sparks helps students learn to reason, teaching students to analyse, apply different strategies and try multiple approaches to finding solutions. It includes tools like Hint, Remember and Challenge, to help teachers differentiate and reach all students.

At every stage, experienced teachers, textbook writers, and syllabus designers have contributed their expertise, giving us a clear idea of what the dictionary’s users really need to know. In addition, we have used state-of-the-art software to analyse the corpora, so that we have a reliable scientific basis for selecting the words to include in the dictionary and for deciding how much information is needed about each word.

Perfect for school ■ Curriculum words in the dictionary are clearly identified in red using one of twenty subject labels ■ Over 100 pictures and diagrams throughout the dictionary illustrate everything from flora and fauna to natural or scientific processes ■ Over 20 full-page illustrations, many in two colours, present and reinforce topic vocabulary course ■ The Study Skills section provides extra tips for school work and includes information on:

It was Divali Day. The house was clean and smelled of spice. Geeta was in the kitchen, peering into bowls and pans. She sniffed the delicious curried vegetables and roti that her Mummy had made for lunch. She looked at a tray of tiny sweets. “They’re beautiful,” she said. “You’re like a little bird, hopping about,” said Mummy. “I’m excited,” said Geeta. “I’m going to put on my lovely new clothes and our friends are going to visit us. It’s the best day of the year.”

REVISED EDITION

These contain a wealth of challenging and interesting activities for children to complete in their exercise books. The activities encourage cooperative learning and skills of record keeping.

WORKBOOKS

Comprehensive Workbooks

The Caribbean Language Arts Project materials have all been thoroughly revised by teams of experienced, practising Primary School teachers and officers of the St Lucia Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports as a cooperative venture with Macmillan Caribbean. They build on earlier materials prepared by the Curriculum and Materials Development Unit of the Ministry of Education in St Lucia. The main content of the series is drawn from the everyday lives of the children, with great use made of people, objects and scenes in the immediate environment. The content is closely linked to the St Lucia Language Arts curriculum, and offers a complete graded development of Language Arts Skills.

How does the revised edition vary from the original edition? The material and style of the original Phonic and Alphabet Books and Workbooks has been upgraded to produce the larger-format, full-colour Activity Books that can be used for several years, and Workbooks that children write in and which therefore need to be changed every year. The six new Readers (one per grade) continue to offer the benefits of graded readers and for the higher grades include comprehension questions and activities. The new books offer a more lively, interesting and up-to-date treatment of Language Arts.

08

www.macmillan-caribbean.com

The fill-in Workbooks allow the teacher and care-givers to assess the progress of individual children. When children have completed all the exercises, the completed Workbooks form an excellent record and reference for future grades.

MATHEMATICS

CARIBBEAN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS Laurie Sealy and Sandra Moore Bright Sparks is a series designed to shine a light on the potential of each child.

READERS

A superb collection of books which children will enjoy and want to read again and again. Aimed at children around 6 to 11 years old, Hop, Step, Jump is not a reading scheme, but a set of absorbing, child-centred stories, rhymes, riddles, songs and fact books, collected from diverse sources and excitingly illustrated in a variety of styles. The books are arranged at three language levels: Hop, Step, Jump. The series moves on from stories told in simple sentences with basic grammatical sentences (HOP), through freer use of language (STEP) to the level of reading reached at the end of primary school (JUMP). From these varied and individual books, students can choose those which challenge or strengthen their reading skills. The following titles are all set in the Caribbean and written by Caribbean authors.

STORY BOOKS

Treasure House 2 A Caribbean Anthology Compiled and Edited by

Veronica Simon Barbara Applin

and

Treasure House is a series of illustrated anthologies for young readers, with stories and poems from all over the Caribbean. Treasure House 1 is suitable for readers aged from 8-10 years old. There is a cautionary tale about three little monkeys and another about a dog that discovers how pride comes before a fall. Grandpa tells of being swallowed by a crocodile. There are stories about being a tomboy, the ups and downs of children’s friendships, dangers of exploring a cave, looking for the Douen and finally the strange adventures of an English boy and a Trinidadian girl in the London Carnival. Treasure House 2 is suitable for readers aged from 10-12 years old. There are stories about kite-flying, games to play on a car journey and making a seashell necklace. What was the link between Zebedee and the Pirates and what was the secret of the Haunted House? We read about a lizard’s adventure and what happened when a seal is washed up on the beach. Poems show children’s thoughts and feelings about new babies, wishes for the future, things that make you angry, wanting to be yourself and things to treasure. Three separate forewords are addressed respectively to the young readers, to teachers and to parents. Each story or poem is followed by questions, activities and discussion points, one to consider before the reading and others to follow after, perhaps with friends or in class groups. The authors talk about themselves and what inspired them, and the afterword encourages the young readers to look back and reflect on what they have experienced in exploring these wonderful Treasure Houses.
